Caper at RIAT 2022

Post by capercaillie »

Well, the weather has been mostly good up to now, Friday afternoon could have done with an hour of sunshine at the right time though!

Some highlights up to now.

Well done catching the "Gripen fart" - I'd just put my camera down, so I saw it but no image. The rest of my party missed it entirely. Any technical explanation for it?

It is part of the display, basically a mini version of what the Aussie F-111s did for years, venting some fuel and lighting it with the afterburner.

Watching his practice knew it was coming on the extended leg of the half Cuban, luckily right over the FRIAT stand.

Nice set Paul - I really like the German A-340 and the Finnish Hawk just finishing off tucking up his wheels.

Good set all around - were you in the P&V area on Friday for that A-4 shot?

The Hind(s) and Hip were the things I really wanted good shots of but I got caught out gas bagging to the people next to me on the fence when the Hungarian Hind went up in the morning, and the light was quite flat for the Czech pair, so I'm quite envious of your photos.

Cheers Dan, light was very good on Saturday.

The A-4 and E-4 are from what becomes yellow zone on the public days, but yes it is basically the left hand side of the eastern park and view. Just follow your nose around the flightline stuff from red zone and you get to a narrow strip called yellow.

Sadly the sun wasn't out for the Hunter, Swedes and E-4 arriving in the afternoon.

I was only there on Friday. I was just the other side of the taxiway in the corner of the red zone but the backdrop for touchdown shots is so ugly. Much prefer your A-4 against the sky.

Your last set of departure shots highlights just how incredible the static display was this year!

Really great post Paul. They are all memorable shots, but the one that stands out the most for me (possibly weirdly) is the E-4 arrival shot. I think a lot of people have found that shot 'challenging' on a number of levels but I think you've really nailed it. Great work indeed. I'm a also a yellow zoner on Friday and took my E-4 shot at 85mm - it's not bad but not as good as yours. It was a good position for the Skyhawk.

I took 15500 photos in 5 days so don't expect anything from me soon.

Cheers,
Rich

Quick question Paul. Was your dress code black cap, white/light top on Friday? Just looking through some photos and thought I'd ask.

Cheers all. I've no idea what I was wearing on the Friday to be honest Rich,  the cap would have been dark blue though!

OK someone is bound to know, what was the bowler hat about?

492 FS, the Madhatters. Also known as the ‘Bolars’, which I believe is derived from the bowler hat they adopted as a motif when they were first stationed in England.
