"It is right that when issues are raised we take swift action to address them, and we continue to strive for an open and honest reporting culture within the service. I thank all of you for the part you play in that, our commanders and line managers especially.
Surely that should be Officers and NCO's ???

Far be it for me to be controversial ( :stuck_out_tongue: ) but this would be the perfect time to do 2 things.....
Civilianise both the RAFAT & BBMF ! :open_mouth:
A lot of the big problems of the RAF today is too much of it has already been civilianised!!

The Army got rid of the Royal Signals' White Helmets motorcycle display team several years ago & disbanded the AHAF, placing all the aircraft on the civil register.
The RNHF did the same with it's aircraft.

Why should the BBMF be any different?
The BBMF is different because it was the RAF's choice for it MOD funded historic section. Some years ago the MOD said the Army, Navy & RAF could have one, and only one public funded historic display element.
The Army chose the Tank Musuem at Bovy (hence the AHAF and White Helmets going, although there were other reasons for the White Helmets ending as well)
The Royal Navy chose HMS Victory, hence the RNHF going, and the RAF chose the BBMF.......so that's why its different.
Is it? Perhaps you could give some examples?

How many civilian volunteers are involved with the RAFAT & BBMF?

HMS Victory ( or to be more accurate the NMRN which she's a part of ) is now essentially a civilian-run & staffed organisation.
Ditto The Tank Museum.

Like the other Services, the RAF have a recruitment & retention problem, not to mention the backlog with pilot training, so does it really make sense to have experienced air- and ground-crew effectively separate from the mainstream units?

Should it or is that an outdated concept?

Obviously, like all large organisations, there has to be an order of seniority. However, outside the military you don't get such a clear class divide.

Yes I know there are routes to "rise from the ranks" and become an officer. However, unless I am well out of date that is still the exception rather than the norm.

Years ago, as a civilian, I had a formal visit to an RAF base on behalf of my professional association. I was there to bestow an award on an NCO. I was given the "state visit" by the officer of the day and taken from department to department, where the staff (wrong word I suppose) were lined up in rank order to shake me by the hand. At some departments the NCO, who was the reason for my visit, wasn't allowed it and had to stand outside and wait.

The same at lunch time, I was taken to the officer's mess and he wasn't!

Frankly I was appalled!

Appears one aircraft suffered a bird strike during the display at Rhyl today, display cut short and all aircraft returned to Hawarden.

Edit - big hole in the canopy of one aircraft from a photo on Facebook.

Good job there was nobody in the back seat from the first pics on the internet.

The rear cockpit area looked intact from the photos I’ve seen. The screen between front and rear seems to have done its intended job perfectly.

Saw a vid on socials this morning (but can’t find it now) of an audible crack happening during the display. Unsure if that was the actual strike or not.

Anyway, for those who haven’t seen:

Fair play to Red 6. His arse must’ve been going like a rabbit’s nose!

No but already heard talk of lawyers getting involved, strong case of unfair dismissal apparently

I heard there was contributory negligence - the bird hadn't even read the NOTAM let alone filed a flight plan.

They were trying to outdo the Black Eagles by doing the Synchro Pass and Goose in one manoeuvre.

I wonder if the pilot had to Duck?

As a quick aside, and not involving the RAFAT, how many bird-strikes were there at this year's RIAT?
Would I be correct in thinking 2 ?

Knowing the Reds luck at the moment it was probably that rare Kelp Gull which showed up in Cambridgeshire recently.

Display abandoned at Bournemouth just after the first Synchro pass. Red 6 having issues again, sounded like they said the engine was unresponsive. It never rains...
