Duxford Festival 2021

Post by ozplane »

Looks like the Duxford Festival will be on 24/25 July next year. I wonder what the format will be.

Do you have a link or source of where you've seen this?

It was on the General Aviation forum on the Flyer Forums. The thread was entitled "End of an era". It also gives a list of the "Flying Days" which I think are the "Showcase" days re-branded and there are a lot more of them. Only two big airshows though, the other one being the B of B show in September.

So no May airshow, they've simply moved it to mid summer. That's a shame, they've displaced Legends not for an extra show, just to move one.

Probably due to uncertainty over COVID restrictions in the early part of the season. (Just like Old Warden have only committed to Drive-In events in the early part of the season.) Not sure IWM will want to repeat the experience of losing a 'major' event again at short notice.

With RIAT gone I don't think this will happen. Hopeful for September though.

And where does it say they are/were going to RIAT?

I'm not talking about the display of the F18... I am talking about the show itself at Duxford which was to be a week after RIAT.

So good you said it twice.

Duxford have enough based aircraft + Ultimate Warbirds from Sywell + Old Warden and other UK based aircraft to put on a show in June. RIAT relies heavily on foreign participation. I doubt Legends will have any warbirds from the continent due to quarantine restrictions.

it also relies on having a crowd which hasn't been allowed by the government thus far.
it won't be the participants that stops the show, it will be whether mass gatherings are allowed.

Lockdown might not last into Summer, and I hope it doesn't. But that will not mean a return to mass gatherings right away.

Being realistic, it will be small steps building up to larger events. Not everything will return to normal as soon as lockdown ends.

With the vaccine rollout going well, there could be a case to be made to allow them, but I just don't see it happening all at once. It will be a phased re-opening and return to what we used to have.

September would be more likely for a Duxford show I think.

So after the last lockdown, what were the Duxford showcase days or Old Warden air shows if they were not mass gatherings of people.

Not in the same respect as a normal airshow is, no.

Old Warden was a drive in show. No mixing of people. Everyone remained in their cars. Very little person to person contact

Duxford showcase days were limited to something like 2000 people, nowhere near the same volume of people that would go to a mid-July (or even when it was May) Air Festival. While obviously, a big amount of people... 2000 people could easily space out across Duxfords airfield keeping contact to a minimum.

A normal airshow could not.

I would love for it to go ahead, but given how many shows have cancelled around the same time as Duxford, I am more hopeful for September allowing bigger crowds.

Can you point me to one airshow on the scale of Duxford that has gone ahead in the UK during these times?

Today's announcement looks positive for this airshow to go ahead IMHO.
