Details for the next two released:

4 AUGUST 2019
RAF Duxford took delivery of it's first Spitfire in August 1938, our Showcase Flying on 4 August will reflect this moment in history.

1.30pm - 2.15pm

Supermarine Spitfire Mk.Ia. Our IWM owned Spitfire N3200 exemplifies the early Spitfires that first flew with 19 Squadron from RAF Duxford in 1939.
Curtiss P-40F Warhawk. One of only two flying in the world, this rare fighter had a Rolls-Royce Merlin engine, the same as used in the Spitfire.
Supermarine Spitfire Mk.Vc. The Spitfire V was a more powerful version of the early Spitfires, used in 1942.
Hispano Buchon HA-112. A Spanish built version of the Messerschmitt Bf109, adversary of the Spitfire during the Battle of Britain.
Hawker Nimrod A biplane naval fighter invented in early 1930's. There are only two remaining in the world, both at IWM Duxford

3.15pm - 4pm

Supermarine Spitfire Mk.IX. Spitfire IX's flew in support of D-Day as a fighter-bomber and supplied fresh beer to troops in Normandy.
Supermarine Spitfire PR MK.XI. Photographic reconnaissance Spitfires were painted blue and pink, camouflage when flying at high or low altitude.
Hawker Hurricane Mk.I. Hurricanes flew alongside Spitfires from RAF Duxford during the Battle of Britain.
North American P-51D Mustang. After flying Spitfires, 19 Squadron pilots flew Mustangs after D-Day.
Supermarine Spitfire Mk.XIV. With the huge Rolls-Royce Griffon engine, this was one of the most powerful Spitfires when flown in 1944.

Content for both of these days in August looks excellent and perhaps goes some way to explaining why IWM seemingly overlooked the home based operators for the May Airshow.

I'm hoping to go on Sunday if the weather isn't awful. How do these flying slots usually run? Is it likely to be a succession of solo displays from the aircraft in each slot?

I've only been to the one in May and on that occasion it was only Sally-B, the P-47 and Mustang advertised beforehand - if I remember correctly. But it wasn't solo displays on that occaision. Was a formation of all three and then the fighters did a pair display. From the way that thy have been laid out on the website I am expecting solos on Sunday, or perhaps a Buchon/Spitfire display thrown in there somewhere too maybe.

Everything other than the Nimrod flew...guessing that was due to the wind.

Another masterclass in how to display a Spitfire from John Romain. If only all warbird displays could be flown like that.

Would love to see JR display a P-51...

Does anyone know who flew the Hurricane on Sunday? Sounded on the comms with the tower that it may have been their first display.

Hi Dave - I'm told it was Neil Oakman in the Hurricane.

Thanks Elliott. I'm struggling to keep up with the recent surge of 'new' display pilots after seeing all the familiar faces for so long. It's undoubtedly a good thing though.

P-36 and P-40 now replaced by Hawk 75 and EP120.

Somewhat disappointing, but no doubt unavoidable.

Would be good to hear how the show case day went. Did the displays live up to expectations etc etc.

It was excellent, a very pleasant way to spend a weekday afternoon. Nice aerobatic displays by the Stearman, Hawk 75 and Spitfire V (subbing for broken P-40C/P-36), then Bearcat and two Sea Furies. After an hour's break, we were treated to the Catalina, Wildcat and Corsair. About an hour and a half of flying in total, sunshine and nice puffy clouds, and a reasonable-sized crowd there. All-in-all a very nice afternoon out from work.

It was an enjoyable day. I was a shame that the two aircraft I was most looking forward to seeing (P-40C and P-36) were the ones that cancelled, but at least TFC are able to provide good alternatives.

Flying was in 2 slots:
Stearman, Hawk 75, Spitfire V, Bearcat, 2 x Furies in the first slot from 1pm
Catalina, Wildcat, Corsair in the second slot from 3pm

For photography the weather and light was inevitably better in the later slot, so it was a shame this was the shorter one. The flying was good, albeit a bit distant for photography, with not many 'photo passes', at least at the M11 end (I always commit to one end of the airfield or the other and invariably think I should have been at the other end!). Highlight for me was probably the Furies, which recreated a similar pairs routine to the Joker slot at Legends.

Nice to see lots of people coming out for a mid-week display though. Felt busy, but not crowded.
