RIAT 2015

Post by boff180 »

Too early for a 2015 thread? Well no not really.

Those that have received their renewal forms for FRIAT and have submitted their renewal will know this but for everyone else.

1. RIAT 2015 will be a 3 day show with Friday being a full public day (not a half day like 2014). Can see Wednesday being very busy! This is due to the new MAA rules as was discussed to death earlier in the year so not a surprise.

2. Those that pay FRIAT by instalments, Direct Debits are not being used for 2015. Instead, they will be sending you a unique reference number once your form has been processed and it will be up to the FRIAT member to set up a Standing Order with their bank to pay the instalments themselves. This is due to the banks cocking up the Direct Debits last year to the point where the team found it difficult to figure out which payment was from which member.

Good news re: the 3 full days. Lots of annual leave days to be taken I suspect! Andy do you think / suspect / know whether the different mach packages will be affected by the addition of a third full public day? I appreciate this may well not have been decided or even discussed yet! Enjoy this weekend B-)
Cheers, Chris

Same as usual the only difference P&V is not open Friday.

Mach 1 = Sat, Sun
Mach 2 = Fri, Sat, Sun, Mon
Mach 3 = Wed, Thur, Fri, Sat, Sun, Mon

Oh forgot to say also likely the static wall on Thursday may no longer go ahead.

Does that mean then there will be the same full 8 hour flying display as the weekend?

Sorry to be a pain, but without trawling through months of old threads, can someone very briefly explain what the new MAA rules are in relation to a third day of RIAT?

Broadly and simplistically (and I appreciate this doesn't explain the other arrivals days) but under the new rules any day that guests are on the airfield to see the displays (ie on the Friday all the VIP's) then this is now classed as an airshow and not an arrivals day. If they have to run the airfield in airshow mode as a result it makes sense to open up to the public too.

As you probably anticipated , I'll be the first to ask.......can DBH really justify having it as a proper 3-day show - as opposed to this year , when the Friday was limited to 10k tickets - not only because of the aircraft participation* ( particularly the sparse static attendance ) but also because it would be unlikely to attract families ( the bulk of show-goers ) on the Friday being as it's a normal school-day ??

*Or are they planning to increase the number of flying participants & have a number of them displaying on one or two days only ( would those buying Mach 2/3 packages or 3-day 'ordinary' tickets really want to see the exact-same acts 3 days running ?? )

Easier said than done, but I would like to see it run with Friday themed differently to Saturday and Sunday. Perhaps Friday could showcase a historical element whereas Saturday and Sunday would, as usual, be mostly centered around modern military. Cut 2 hours off the flying, and discount the ticket compared to the weekend, and you'd get a more varied display over the three days, and attract a different audience that would potentially be quite busy. Historic aircraft that are flying Friday but not the weekend could be put into static between Fri and Sat creating a great themed static area.

Do we know whether we will still have arrivals on Friday or will everything need to be in and validated by Thursday night?

I didn't realise you can pay via instalments for the RIAT package - how can one do this?

Actually the reason for the half day this year was as a test/experiment to see if their plans/ideas for full third day worked.

Not sure if it's been covered on the forum. But now Mr Prince isn't in charge, will things be different, run different etc?

Yep , but all it really proved is that they could sell an extremely limited number of tickets for what was supposedly a special event
How well that'll translate to a full display programme with the whole showground open - so no late static arrivals or DAs - and having to shift 5 or 6 times as many tickets is another matter ( unless they have the Friday as another 'special' day along the lines of G-CVIX's suggestion )

The Friday this year didn't even sell out did it?
Pretty sure there were still tickets left by Thursday night (out of 10,000)...

We were told by an Air Marshall (can't remember his name) that the pit days are like a trial for what's to come in 2018, something to do with the 100th anniversary of the formation of the RAF, that should be the big one.

Brilliant, no local consultation with the local villages yet again. How are we expected to get to work, children to school etc on the Friday. This year was bad enough with a 25min trip to work taking an hour. I enjoy air displays as much as the next man, currently serving in the RAF, but enough is enough. Happy to loose any freedom of movement for a weekend but weekdays are now starting to take the pee. A good start will be stopping all the idiots who think it is ok to park cars on the cycle path alongside the Whelford/Kempsford road slowing down the road to a drawl. Sorry to rant but RIAT really need to look after their neighbours, goodwill only goes so far.

Love the idea of a more historic theme to the Friday - it does need a USP to separate it from the two weekend days and increase its likelihood of popularity, otherwise it's simply another show day. Even a few passes from arriving aircraft would be nice; akin to the Midair Hunter on Friday.

Three days is a lot to ask for FRIAT members who are already paying more for less aircraft - the idea of three virtually identical show days out of the six is not an attractive proposition to me, unless there is a very unique flavour to the Friday.

I fully understand where you're coming from but you'd be better making these complaints as a serious address to DBH than to us.
