I thought it was Rhymes' decision to take the money offered to them for not opening, with Totterdown rejecting it. Not RIAT/MAA/CAA or whoever wanting one more than the other to close?

As far as I know Rhymes were told if they tried to open, all access roads would be shut leading to the campsite and offered them an alternative field on the South side. Not sure if they were offered money not to open as well as.I think Totterdown was offered money not to open but declined. They apparently did want Rhymes gone more so, meaning aircraft could use Rhymes as a display axis so I was told.

I think it depends on where you are standing on the crowd line as it is a very long line and the display centre is a fixed point

2016 CAA regs state

Action 19: with immediate effect
 where a display aircraft is performing aerobatics at a speed of between
200 and 300 kt IAS, the minimum distance between the crowd and the
display line must be 230 metres;
 where a display aircraft is performing at a speed in excess of 300 kt IAS,
and the display includes any high speed manoeuvres towards the crowd,
the minimum distance between the crowd and the display line must be
450 metres; and

RIAT is I believe held under MAA rules but I seem to remember that after Shoreham the CAA adopted the MAA minimum separation rules.

In this video you can see the pilot appears to be using a display axis which is over or slightly to the North of the hangars on the North side of the runway which would broadly tie in with the distances quoted above.

If you are enquiring because of lens length anxiety then on a 'crop' sensor you will need at least 300mm, preferably more and on a full frame sensor probably significantly more unless you have the pixels to do a lot of cropping.

500mm on full frame is a touch too close from the FRIAT enclosure. Even a head on shot of the F-35B hovering was JUST barely able to squeeze onto the full frame sensor.
So I'd agree that 300mm on a crop would be good.

This is same as it has been for years-230m and the 450m datum is for aircraft flying toward the crowd at speeds in excess of 300kts.

Thanks for the replies. At Avalon we are 80 meters away from the runway.I think Red Dragon can attest to this.Everybody that comes to Avalon from abroad can't believe how close we are to the runway. Was just wondering if the rules are the same over there.

Runway is a little closer than 230m I believe, hence why touch and go and rotation photos tend to be the best (for me, anyway).

Same question as last Wednesday...what do we think might get confirmed tomorrow?

I'm still hoping on the Mig 29 demo to come back. Maybe add the F-35 to the show (I still think it's going to get added). The previously mentioned Mig 21? Breitling Jet Team?

Probably the Breitling Jet Team and Wing Walkers, going by the email I received today from Breitling. As a mjor sponsor of the show I'd presume this is a pretty reliable source.
I would have attached the image from the email, I tried, failed and quit trying. More Homer Simpson, less Robert the Bruce I'm afraid.

Mildy 135
F-15s from the Heath
Breitling Jet Team
Static F-16s

Get that lot added, and I'll be as happy as a relatively contented pig.
Posting comments on an aviation-related chatroom, are ya? Looks like it an' all...

Hopefully an Eastern block jet display.

Ukranian Su-27
Romanian Mig 21
Slovakian Mig 29
Polish Su-22

Any of those would add to the already excellent flying display.

Just thinking, isn't it a DBH tradition to get a new country to attend each year? Unless I've missed an obvious one then this year we havent had one as of yet.

Ukranian su 24 would be lush, though any one of the ones mentioned above would make my day.

What's the odds that today's update will include the traditional cancellation of the NATO E-3 ( surprised it hasn't already done so )......

For me I would just like to see the Polish Air Force either confirm or decline, then I can have a better idea of what acts to follow through the camera eye piece and which to watch with my eyes.

Any other additions from other nations (static or flying) are a bonus.

Less that a month too go!!
