2018 Security
Here we go again....
Emptied pockets to make the metal detector scan go quicker (so could have had anything in my pockets that then transferred into side pocket of bag.) Security guy double checks as wand goes off near my trouser pocket (jean rivit?), I turn the pocket inside out to show I have nothing and he waves me through to bag checkers
We get to the bag check, I have a massive cooler box and my friend has a massive camera box, we get waved though with zero checks. So what was the point?

Shh, you are meant to play along and not question the pointlessness of it all! Remember, it is not what you do but what you are seen to do.
Re: 2018 Security
Ahhh yes. They waved the wand thingie over me, had to empty pockets, ‘what’s in there’, showed him asthma inhaler, ‘what’s in there’ showed him handful of coins. ‘On your way sir’ Off I go, Then overheard his colleague ‘so, what about his rucksack’

Re: 2018 Security
its very easy to be sarcastic etc about this and it is ridiculous BUT if something did happen inside the base, how would these posts then be interpreted. The lack of security is a big issue IMHO

Re: 2018 Security
My experience today.
1) tickets scanned
2) waved past metal detector
3) waved past bag check.
Brilliant security

Yesterday I had my bag checked manually.
Today I had my bag (and fold up chair) xrayed...
Expecting a latex glove up my arse tomorrow...

Re: 2018 Security
RIAT still refuse to accept we are their customers and they should be asking us what we want rather than just treating us as an inconvenience.
Yesterday at Red entrance got wanded but it failed to pick up anything such as large collection of loose change 'shrapnel' or two sets of keys in my bag - suspect it either wasn't switched on or had been adjusted to its lowest sensitivity so he didn't have to investigate any bleeps. No bag search even though I had a 'bomb trolley' of stuff .
Today arrived 7am - queue already from security area to back of car park. Decided to let the queue go down as I know sometimes they have trouble getting the scanners to work first thing etc. Rookie mistake queue was soon 'snaked' all the way back to the security area and then all the way back to the back of the car park again! Joined now massive queue which in fairness did move at a reasonable pace. Got to security - no wand and no bag search. Squaddies who apparently should have been on bag search detail were all stood around in groups drinking coffee making it quite clear there was no way in Hell they were going to look in a bag.
Same shambles every year - insufficient personnel to stop huge queues building (even though the number of cars arriving on the base was at this time only steady trickle) and threatened security checks abandoned early on in risible attempt to manage queue size.

Re: 2018 Security
The thing that niggles is that they have the lady on the tannoy preaching after every other display about how much our security means to them, while they allow a massive crowd of people to gather outside the red gate; an incredibly soft target, before the all important security checks that never happen anyway. A completely pointless exercise and frustrates a lot of people. Personally I enjoy people watching so my blood pressure remained much lower than some of the visitors.
If they allowed the pedestrians from Whelford and the campsites to enter via yellow like they did last year then the circus that was red this morning would be totally suppressed.

Re: 2018 Security
Absolutely the large crowd waiting to be checked is a security risk !
Re: 2018 Security
Perhaps it would be better of they did thorough checks on a few random people rather than cursory checks on all?

Suppose you’d say the same about the airport security queue
Re: 2018 Security
The only real way to be more secure and make the security checks more meaningful is to restrict the quantity that people bring in.
I recall this has been adopted for some other European shows. One small bag, no food, no liquids!
I would love to read how that would go down.
I am sure the official explanation for not checking everyone would include the word "profiling"

Re: 2018 Security
Not true Im afriad, when we went through security on Fri, the bag check guys were just standing around doing nothing, there was a queue but this was created by the metal detector wand guys, checking bags afterwards would have made no difference to the queue,
I do wonder if there are official orders re who gets checked (racial profiling?) or do they just trust the guys on bag check duty ?
also, I would assume the X ray machines are expensive to hire? Why hire them and not use them?. Almost every year, we see this at RIAT and nothing changes.

Re: 2018 Security
Friday.....'magic wand' bloke at one of the Blue entrance lanes was loudly telling everybody that they were only scanning one in five punters.
I had my small rucksack searched ( cursory glance after I opened the zips, nothing removed so I could have had anything in there ) yet I watched them wave several 'bomb trollies' loaded with large cool-boxes & cardboard boxes straight through in other lanes.
Given the VIPs & Buck House bods who were attending on the Friday, that was a pathetic effort.
Saturday, didn't get searched.....neither did anyone else in the other lanes that I saw.

Re: 2018 Security
That's interesting BC, I went though Blue and that fits in exactly to what I saw.
"bomb trollies" is a good description. Every year I see more and more punters bringing in these trollies (including mysefl and mates) and they can take a considerable weight. It's a horrible thought concerning what one of these could do "fully loaded" but good security is about having these horrible thoughts and bringing in measures to prevent them or , at least, reduce their likelyhood.

That’s Global Security for you! Unfortunately they don’t seem to have a clue what they are doing most of the time. The car parking contractor SEP events were equally as bad. Although it didn’t hold us up massively, people in the red carpark were trying to join the traffic queue out of the show ground here there and everywhere whilst a group of the stewards just stood around chatting. When it became clear that it wasn’t working, one of them suddenly got up and walked in front of our car shouting stop to which I was puzzled as to why she was so angry. Shouted ‘BYE’ aggressively through the window whilst scowling at me. Some of them clearly don’t want to be there...

It seems to me that the organisers simply cannot win.
if they had super strict security and screened everyone / everything coming onto base - you'd all moan that it was taking so long!

Re: 2018 Security
Screening everyone is not super strict security, it's security.
Waiving people through (and showing in advance that they will be waived through) is no security.
And how long does it take just to lift the lid on a cool box?

Err...it may have escaped your notice, but the ones doing the baggage searches weren't security staff -- they were squaddies/RAF, same as usual.
From what I saw on the Friday & Saturday, their criteria for deciding who to search was to wave through those with loads of kit ( especially the aforementioned 'bomb trollies' ) and select those with small - quick & easy to search - bags.

Simple - set a limit on how much people can take in.
Ban the 'bomb trolley' brigade ( or as I've seen a couple of years, supermarket shopping trolleys ! )
Ban those rocking up with 100L+ Bergans.
Increase the number of entrance ( and therefore baggage search ) lanes.
Speaking about 'Blue' ( although I assume the other entrances are similar )...
Move the ticket-checks to outside the main gates - where the concrete barriers are would be a good place.
Start the fenced lanes further away ( just past the road crossing ) and move the 'magic wanders' further forward & increase the number of them.
You then have a far larger area to conduct proper baggage searches in.
Ordinary concert & sporting venues have - and enforce - regulations on how big a bag you can take in ( in an increasing number of cases, it's a 'no bags' policy ) and also do 100% bag searches.
And before someone pipes up about RIAT being different because of the crowd size, other venues see a similar footfall - often over a shorter timeframe - and cope well enough.

Given that you posted directly after my & pbeardmore's posts about baggage searches & 'bomb trollies' & didn't quote any other post, what else would you have been referring to?

Which is something some of us raised on this forum several years ago & it's something I've commented on when filling in the RIAT Feedback form in recent years.
No different to any other venue, though, and the problem is where do you stop?
You could have a couple of explodydopes in the scrum outside the search areas.....ditto in the queues on the road outside....ditto in the car park....ditto in the queue waiting to enter the car park....ditto in the queue several miles away....in the park & ride bus area in Swindon....heck, you could even have a dozen jihadis armed with AKs hanging out the side & rear doors of a couple of vans driving down the opposite carriageway brassing up the traffic on the A419.

Re: 2018 Security
Does a big cooler box take that much longer to search than a rucksack? And, Ill say this again, when we were waved throuigh, there was no queue re bag search so no time issue. The people behind us were being "wanded" so looking in our stuff would have made no difference to the queue. Once you created a delay (ie wands), what happens after that makes no difference to the initial queue unless what you are doing takes longer. A 5 second "open the cooler and quick rumage around" at least provides some form of deterrent rather than waving stuff through.
PS on the basis that people were emptying their pockets before the wands, are we to assume they are searching for explosive/suicide vests?

Re: 2018 Security
Given that the wands are metal-detectors, no.
If you remember when they first started doing this, they were telling people to empty their pockets ( they even handed out clear lastic bags to put your stuff in ) and when being 'wanded' you'd also be asked about anything you did leave in your pockets ( wallet, snot-rag, etc. ) which doesn't happen these days.
