Ref the Harrier "people pod", yes it was built and fitted, but as far as I know, never actually flown with anyone in it (unlike the P-38 pod which was used a lot).

The Americans had a similar plan, but again, I don't think it was ever flown.

I guess the ultimate form of improvisation was the early WW1 aircraft designed only with observation in mind. Soon enough they were carrying small bombs in the footwell and being hand launched by the pilot or 2nd man! And this then led to their opponents carrying a firearm to take a pot shot at the hand-bombers.

Soon enough, improvisation led to aircraft being fitted with basic but more effective weapons systems.

Apologies if someone has beaten me to it but what about the numerous variants of the King Air? I wouldn't have guessed that a humble little transport/utility plane would provide such a capable platform for things like the Shadow to become successful.
