first air show

Post by hussar »

Hello All.
I am new to this forum and this is my first post.
Which was the first air show you attended? Mine was at Greenham Common on June 27 1971. The entrance fee was I believe £3 and the programme, which I still have was 80p.The flying display started at 10am and the last display was at 5.50pm.. There were over 100 planes on static display and some of the flyers one never sees today in the air ie; Buccaneers, Lightnings, Jaguars, Starfighters Transalls, Phantoms etc;
I still have programmes from every show I have been to, the top shelf of my wardrobe is full of them. Being of an advanced age I do not travel as far as I used to but still like to do Shuttleworth once a year and maybe Shoreham. I did visit Abingdon this year and thought what an excellent show, well organised and the staff were such a cheery lot.
I was never in the RAF myself but did eight years in the army, three of them as a Churchill tank driver/mechanic.

Farnborough SBAC 1950. And I wish I had kept that and all the subsequent programmes for airshows I have attended over the years.

Welcome to the forum! Now that airshow I wish I'd have been old enough to attend to really remember it,but I had just appeared into the world in that year! I was at my very fisrt airshow either later in that year or in 72 at Prestwick, both parents just not long out of 603 sqn, and I was immediately given my first cockpit experience at my first airshow,a Vulcan bomber! Don't remember much of it but loved a good airshow ever since and as a wee boy was taken to Prestwick airport on several occasions to go onto the balcony to watch the traffic!
As for tanks, only been in tracked APC's I think also a Scorpion, when the Army used to have display days many years ago!

My first airshow (at least the first that I went to on my own) was the Kjeller Flydag in 1997, when I was 12, and I've been going pretty much every year since :)

My first airshow was Cosford in '91. I can't remember much about it apart from the Shackleton flying in place of the Lancaster and being absolutely petrified of the Vulcan  I never missed a single Cosford Airshow since until last year.

East Fortune 2006, bit of a late developer when it comes to airshows as I was 14. Went to Leuchars for the first time that same year and have been going with my uncle every year since.

My first airshow was a Benson BoB show mid 50s,cant pinpoint the exact year, did another Benson show in 1958,me and a school pal biked the 10 miles or so...
memories are only vague...unfortunately I then got interested in other things and didnt bother with airshows for years!
glad to say the interest was rekindled, albeit by the sheer luck of me working on Abingdon airbase in the BoB week 1971(I lived in Abingdon at the time too!)I kind of realised I must have missed some good shows, but what a time to get interested again.... the 70s on with the advent of the air tattoos etc, must have been the best years of all!

The first show I can remember going to was the Air Fete at Mildenhall in 1997, I was only four at the time - but I can remember the Thunderbirds, a B-2 and a very noisy B-1B.

Would be a Biggin Show around 1970... I'm led to believe I wet myself after being surprised by a fast, low, loud Sea Vixen pass (I was 3-4 years old at the time) ... but as there is no actual proof of this event i just assume it's my dad trying to embarrass me :)

Coningsby 1984/5 although I'm not sure they ever had 'airshows' so it may have been a families day. First big airshow was Mildenhall 1986, surprised it didn't put me off them to be honest.

Coningsby definitely had an airshow in 1986, I was there

First show was Shobdon in '77 or '78, but first I remember properly was Cosford in 1982. First IAT was Fairford in 1985 and been to everyone since including both Boscombes (90 and 92) and both Cottesmores. First overseas was Bierset in 1993.

RAF Bentwaters (Being a Felixstowe boy) circa late 80's

I remember my personal highlights as being

USAF Agressor F16's
USAF F111's (SEA Camo)
USAF RF4C's (Lizzard Camo)
USAF based A10's
Italian and German AF F104's

Sloppy Joe's, a kind of spiced mince in a bun that I have never been able to find since (at either numerous Mildenhall airshows or when i visited the US a few years ago....)

My first airshow was the 1994 Southport Airshow.

The weather was very grey and drizzly at times, I remember the "Firebird"
Tornado F3 doing its low level display with many 360 radius turns on full afterburner awesome.
I also remember the F27 Troopship display turning off one engine at one point and flying on one engine,
also the radial pair with gary numan in one of the Harvards, had a great time.

Le Bourget 1989, the one that had the An225 carrying Buran. Don't get me started about how I got there!

Heard a lot of stories about the MiG 29 at Farnborough the year before, so after having seen that one I decided to go for a look at the static, turning my back to the next item, which was something called a Su 27.  :wall:

RAF Leuchars 1986 didn't really stay for long - not really a spotter back then but first sight on arrival Red Arrows arrival, nuff said really got me really hooked and wanting to go back.

My first airshow was the International Air Tattoo (IAT) 1985 - If I remember correctly the SR71 Blackbird was the star attraction.

It was in the high security area with the TR-1A (U-2), B-52G and a pair of F-111s, following the Greenham graffiti incident two years earlier!
1985 was a quiet tattoo, fewest countries since they started, Dak's 50th, Skytanker, last large gathering of F-104s, lots of tasty MoD(PE) stuff though.

I went to both of those [there was a show on both of those years] - living in the southeastern suburbs of Coventry meant we could walk to Baginton (quite a trudge down that long Siskin Drive though) one of those was very warm, although I could be confusing the weather on the Pope's visit to Coventry Airport in '82. The 1982 RAFA show at Cov probably goes down as my first show; one we actually went in to. IAT'93 was my first Tattoo and that was a corker of an airshow.
