Post by Binky Airways »

The Imperial War Museum has drawn up a list of aircraft's at Duxford for disposal.

Anyone who's been to Duxford's hangars will notice some of the 'disposed' aircraft's including:

  • Junkers Ju52
  • Fieseler Fi-156 Storch
  • Vickers Varsity T1
  • De Havilland Sea Vampire T22
  • De Havilland Sea Venom FAW 21

Different vampire. The Vampire mentioned is the dissasembled one in Hangar 5.

The recently restored Vampire is a T.11 not the T.22 which is currently on the Queen Mary trailer in Hangar 5 - the restoration hangar.

What why the Sea Venom & Storch?

Wonder if the GR9 will go in Venom place?

It and some other exhibits are being stored at Duxford temporarily whilst Lambeth is undergoing renovation.

Would love the Varsity. I had the chance to take a look inside her at a FoD event a couple of years ago. Quite a sorry state. Very unstable as 3 of us found out when heading towards the cockpit the aircraft jolted forward. Skip to 47 seconds.

They may be identical to the man in the street but the museum has a policy/remit to work to as part of the founding act and charity status. The IWM was founded to collect weapons and other material from wars and conflicts that Great Britain and her Commonwealth countries took part in. Being airframes that did not take part in any wars or conflicts that Great Britain and the Commonwealth took part in, they do not fit in with the the policy/remit of the museum so put up for disposal.

And before any one mentions airliners, they do not belong to the the IWM.

The Lightning & TSR2 are British, not French knock-offs.

Did the Jaguar not take part in a conflict the British were involved in quite recently?.

I didn't realise that was the precise remit. So if that is the case neither the TSR2 nor Lightning fall into the criteria, do they?

The remit today is actually quite broad but the original remit was that precise. Look it up.

And that breadth is the justification for exhibiting aircraft that might otherwise fall outside that strict remit. I have no quarrel with it, if it enables me to stand next to a TSR2, without having to travel twice as far each time!

Interesting that the Spanish knock-off Heinkel (Casa 2-111) apparently falls within the Museum's remit, but the French Ju-52 and Storch knock-offs do not. :dizzy:

The CASA is more relevant to Duxford because of the BoB film that the French 'knock-offs'.

I wasn't aware that the IWM's remit includes 'relevance to Duxford in the post-war, post-closure era'

If it did, surely the Varsity would fit this remit too.

Wandering off topic slightly, I am a FOD first timer this year - how do you get to see exhibits otherwise not open to the public? Would be interested in looking at aeroplanes/mil vehicles that are normally 'off limits' to joe public...

There is a newsletter that comes out with all the info.

If I remember hearing correctly I think the next trip for them is a base tour of RAF Mildenhall and Lakenheath.
