Bomber Command Memorial: Coverage Thread
they would rather show repeats of bargain hunt and cash in the attic than the bomber command memorial ceremony

Re: shame on the bbc
This is something which deserved full dedicated coverage. All it will get on BBC News 24 is loose coverage with commentary from some probably ill-informed supposed expert in the studio.

Perhaps the powers that be werent taught proper history at school?
maybe they should read the 2 page article in Saturdays Daily Mail (by Tony Rennell) to bring em up to date

Re: shame on the bbc
Another thing is the fact some bomber command veterans have been refused to go just so the MPs can be in the limelight/front seats when they did bugger all to this Memorial .

BBC response in the article
So it isnt snubbing Bomber Command service, just the express poo stirring again.
Surprised they didnt mention Diana somewhere in the article
A BBC spokesman said: “We are aware of the significance of this story, both for the veterans and for our audiences. The midday service is being filmed for later inclusion in a special programme Bomber Command: A Tribute on BBC2 at 5pm.
“The BBC News Channel is also currently planning to carry the service live at midday. The Bomber Command Association are happy with our plans and have been working closely with us.”

Re: shame on the bbc
f4phixeruk completely agree
Once again its the papers stirring up a non-story. The BBC are providing live coverage on a national channel and then highlights of service and an appropriate tribute that evening. This seems entirely appropriate coverage to me.

Lesson number 1 - don't believe the rubbish you read in the UK tabloids - or any tabloids for that matter. It's all just fodder for the plebs (no offence intended )!

I just wish them well for the ceremony taking place around this long overdue memorial, and hope that as many veterans as wish to attend are allowed to do so..

Precisely - the question is usually loaded to elicit the answer required....but I stand to be corrected if anyone actually knows the question!

With the Express also surprised they didn't mention that not showing it live on BBC 1 was because of illegal immigrants
Re: shame on the bbc
Please check the person who owns express newspapers and you won't be surprised too see a 'slight' bias and bashing of the Beeb?
There is a 'viscious' rumour that such a person may have been seen goose stepping in front several german company directors a few years ago.
Move on , nothing to see here. . .

Re: shame on the bbc
Regionally I know that the BBC is active with various items re Bomber Command!
I believe that the Nottingham based news-team may also be taking a veteran down to London on the 28th and filming 'his day!'
NAM Updater wrote: BBC East Midlands Today (1830 -1900 hours) should be running two news items relating to Bomber Command this evening (18th June) and tomorrow evening (19th June).
Filming with veterans and local people with aviation interests was completed a few weeks ago at Newark Air Museum, Staunton in the Vale and Langar.

Yet the headline doesn't really say that . Wonder why?

You have about 10 hours to catch last night’s BBC East Midlands Today news item on Bomber Command in the East Midlands on this link:

Further pieces will be broadcast tonight and tomorrow night.

Re: Bomber Command Memorial: Coverage Thread
Make a diary note of this on Yesterday at 2100 tonight:
Who Betrayed The Bomber Boys
Stephen Fry narrates this stirring tribute to the brave RAF Bomber Command fighters who bombed Germany in WWII. Over 55,000 lives were lost, so why did their country desert them?

Been watching it on the beeb, Tornado footage not bad but the Lancaster footage was woefully poor.
Re: Bomber Command Memorial: Coverage Thread
Just watched it from the front of a very sunny Palace - lovely sight as the Tornados flew through followed by the Lancaster - the Poppies made quite a cloud of red as they fluttered down. A lovely tribute for a well overdue memorial.

Well, yes, but Isuppose it rather puts into focus the reason for the long wait for recognition. From Churchill down the "bomber boys" were ignored for precisely that reason. Guilt. Which is why it is poignant and fitting that they finally have the recognition they have long deserved.

Re: Bomber Command Memorial: Coverage Thread
I had the honour of parading my RAF Association Area Standard in front of the ranks of Bomber Command veterans in Green Park this morning, tremendous turnout in fantastic weather, although a little too hot at times. I was stood among the veterans watching the 'Big Screen' for the flypast by the Tornadoes which was very well received, and when the Lancaster flew over and dropped the poppies, many a tear was shed. All in all an excellent and well organised event.
