RAFMF - just for fun

Post by pbeardmore »

OK, if you could add one existing flyable aircraft to the team, what would it be? Got to be Harrier for me.

One of (not necessarily in order of preference)

Mosquito

Blenheim

Hunter

Meteor

I'd love to see a Harrier airborne again, but not within the rigid confines of the Flight. (Then again that really applies to all the others, so we are probably better off as we are (imo)
nothing is confirmed at a show until its u/c hits the tarmac or it is running in for its display.....

Your interpretation of flyable was interesting too. There are no flyable Harrier GR.7s or 9s, as far as I can tell?

I'd have to agree with the Harrier. Such an iconic and identifiable machine and statement of British engineering, and one that Joe Public would love to see again.

Plenty of other contenders though...

I don't know everything there is to know about our hobby.

Kids, aviation, missus then responsibilities, (in that order)

What's your definition of existing flyable? As far as I'm aware all existing RAF Harriers are no more flyable than the Valiant or Lincoln at Cosford as it stands?

I think the Harrier is probably the most iconic British aircraft in this respect and would be worthy of such a flight. Otherwise I'd say Hunter or something. I guess we'd rather something uniqueish though.

I wonder if we'll ever get a regular F-35B display at future airshows, and if so, whether that will diminish the need for a preserved, flying Harrier. After all, one noisy, hovering jet is pretty much the same as another to most airshow goers.

Valiant!

On a serious note, Buccaneer.

I'm a Mosquito man through and through, so if we just take that as read, and since nobody else has paid a blind bit of attention to the "extant, flyable", I offer the following:

Vickers Wellington
Bristol Beaufighter
Handley Page Hampden

or how about some Lend-Lease:

Douglas Boston
Consolidated Liberator (in full Coastal Command "white crow" colours)
