A teen who needs a job- any advice?

Post by TH1213 »

Hi all,

Apologies mods if this is in the wrong place or not appropriate, please do remove if so. I live in SE London and recently I've been enquiring to find employment. I would love a job in aviation and have pestered endless companies with CV's and phone calls. Of course I'm happy to work outside aviation, any money is good money after all and I wouldn't want this to turn into a debate about being not prepared to work like a certain member of this forums recent post was  . This morning I had a brainwave and thought I'd ask the advice of everyone on here. Does anyone have any contacts/advice they could give me to get into aviation? Any help big or small would be great! Feel free to PM me any info if you wish!

Thanks again

Thomas

Probably wrong side of London for you but we're currently looking for someone at our Instrument workshop.
If it's for you please PM. Just to make you aware I'm only an employee and have no say in who gets taken on.
Hope this helps.

Check out a website:Linedkin and start building up an online CV. Turn up at your local airfield and offer to clean hangar floor, make teas, try to volunteer at Museum, show you are willing to do anything. Hope this helps

Here's a link to the NATS website on careers. It may be of some interest to you. It's not all about having to be a graduate or highly skilled person.

Have you thought about the RAF? If you can get in on a tech job working on aircraft, you would also be pretty secure on employment when leaving.
"Nice pics mate" comments only! No criticism please.

If you think you would suit it, any of the 3 services could offer aviation based employment, and training to boot, and the wages aren't to be sniffed at either.

I did 25 years as an RAF eng techie (Jaguar, Chipmunk, Tornado GR's and F3, C-130K's and J's), and now civvie in MoD, so feel free to pm if you want.

Also, we have a contact with a budget carrier on the forum, who's responsible for engineering apprentices, so I could put you in touch with him as well.

Hi Thomas,

If you don't fancy the services, what about civilian aviation life ?
You could try an apprenticeship scheme, British Airways run a few;

http://www.britishairways.com/careers/apprentices.shtml

or maybe try some other carriers

or plug in your details into http://www.trovit.co.uk/ and let it look for careers for you !

Hope this helps

Afraid the days of a perfect job being on your doorstep are long gone. You need to be ready, willing and able to relocate or commute these days.

Get yourself the highest qualification you can manage, preferably a degree or equivalent and then start looking.

Sadly, even that doesn't guarantee you the job you desire. Experience, whether voluntary or paid is the way to get your foot in the door. Jobs these days tend to be a lot of 'not what you know' but 'who you know' as well.

Exactly what I've found, hence why I'm asking for contacts as well!

Of course it doesn't guarantee "the job you desire". It never has and it would be a bad day for Britain if ever it did. But neither is it " who you know”. A candidate for job has to impress first by CV and then by interview skills. The OP has to decide whether he can do this.
