How did people get to know about this retirement, didn't see it in any magazines. What will be used for small transport in future?

Go on then, I'll give it a go.

Something of a minor news story to be had here, wasn't the out-of-service date around 2021-22 originally?
Why brought so far forward?

Originally, I'd guess that they were planning to replace them with 'something', which would have taken time to specify and procure. As they've discovered with Harrier, Nimrod etc. though, replacing an aircraft type with 'nothing' is much easier, and can be done at a stroke.

The BAe 146s, of which there are now two(?) extra aircraft as they are not tied down in Afghanistan.

My view on the VIP/liasion aviation in the RAF is, it does need a major boost.
A large A330 class aircraft is needed to fill the transatlantic PM/Queen intercontinental transportation. IIRC a few year's ago the PM's office hired a DC-8 Biz-jet for god's sake! I might not like the politics of the PM that gets out of this aircraft in a country far away, but I want the image of UK to be enhanced. Virtually all countries provide this transport service to it's leaders, why can't we?
Also, A319 and Falcon size jets needed to carry out domestic and European transport role. During conflicts these aircraft could fill the role of liasion flights.
I would further suggest some B350's for UK transport of VIP's.
A replacement for the A109's would, I expect be useful in the VIP transport role.
As shown in Afghanistan and Iraq the use of 125's as liasion aircraft was role that the RAF/MOD may not have forseen, but did come about.
The urgent procurement of additional 146's for small inter-theatre transport seems to have been forced onto MOD/RAF because the lack of foresight to see this need.
I know there is an arguement that all monies ahould go to front line squadrons and I can see the arguement for this, but the airforce is NOT all about the projection of force, sometimes it is the projection of image, sometimes it is having various types of aircraft on strength, being used for "normal" transport roles that can be turned to other unforeseen uses or provide support to the forces in various places around the world in whatever shape that need takes.
A lot off-topic! I need a Mod to tell me off!

Not off topic, just pie in the sky (A330, A319! BA aircraft much more vfm over the course of a year. And the Quuen don't travel much any more! Most VIPs actually just go scheduled airlines anyway. Perhaps a role for the Voyager with a VIP fit at the front? Replacing 125s with higher cost 146s when only 4 people need transport seems strange. But if those special fit 146s have returned here then 4 of em in total to me satisfies the need for our size of Gov/armed forces.
That DC8 was Swiss registered and went u/s with Blair on board once I recall.

Not a new story at all, the retirement of the 125 fleet was reported in the Sunday Times in December.

I'm sure Phil mentioned it at the night shoot last year that this one would be last the 125 would be on view so not exactly new news.

In reply to Traveller, while this Govt is blinded by dogma and "conviction", anything that isn't a Combat service can be "contracted out". And I wouldn't hold your breath on combat, either.
