So its not G-TIMM/XS111 really XP504 that's gone down as people been saying then but XR538 the Red & white one?

James

I'm pretty sure I saw G-TIMM. Have just been down to Hawarden to see if I can see it anywhere but it's not visible at the moment...

Yes its the Gnat display team.

That is awful, they were one of the highlights of the day. Made a striking entrance to the show.

Sad news.

No idea of reliability, but West Midlands emergency services are saying pilot ejected successfully according to ITV news.

@KylieStevens4: Seems the Spitfire at Biggin Hill lost power on take off and had to make a force landing and all is ok

Regarding the BHHH Spitfire - don't shoot the messenger.

West Midlands emergency services confirmed the pilot had successfully ejected

Actually, it does...above quote appears on the ITV site - and is apparently a statement by the West Mids emergency services...

As for the Spitfire, if the pic I saw indicates anything, it was far from a forced landing judging by the attitude of the aircraft. Looks more as if it went down when attempting to get back to the airfield.

Do hope the pilot has indeed ejected safely.

The Spitfire incident has its own thread here viewtopic.php?f=2&t=68659&view=unread#unread

That's not an account connected to any of the emergency services so I wouldn't put to much stock in what they tweet.

The pilot has died, terrible news

The pilot of an aircraft which crashed near the CarFest event has died, festival organiser and BBC presenter Chris Evans has confirmed.

That is indeed very sad news. From the descriptions here and on the BBC news site it did look like any kind of ejection, let alone a safe one, was unlikely. Not been a good few days.

Their Twitter feed does state 'official account' but nevertheless they have been a stream of misinformation regarding this crash.

It's terrible news made worse by the amount of poor information being put out by the press. The BBC who are live on the scene just said it was a Spitfire....

Completely gutting news to come after such a great show on Thursday.

Tragic. Feel very sorry for his friends and family.

Just read that there was also a Spitfire crash at Biggin Hill, the pilot is injured but has survived. The plane looks severely damaged.

Just sad on the radio that the pilot lost his life. Thoughts and prayers go out to the pilots family and friends.

Some of the twaddle i've seen written on Facebook/Twitter/Forums is just disgusting, sadly people just don't think when these terrible situations occur. Social media truly is the biggest nuisance at times... :(

Thoughts & prayers are with the pilots family/friends and also the Gnat Display Team. #BlueSkies

Without wishing to get too much into it, her words were: "I understand that the plane that was used was a former Spitfire"...
