Hornet down at LN *note to members*
Guys,
We have received word that a Hornet has crashed on departure from LN today.
No further news is available at the moment however, alongside action being taken by our colleagues at Fighter Control, we do not think it is appropriate to speculate at this time over the causes or the status of the pilot. Therefore this is a heads up that any thread started will be deleted. This thread will be locked, proper updates will be posted when more information is known.
I personally met the unit not two weeks ago and my thoughts are with them right now.
Thanks
Andy

It is with sadness I must advise the Police have confirmed the pilot has not survived.
Blue skies doesn't quite cut it for me today.
As there is now some official news, I have unlocked the thread.
PLEASE do not speculate on the cause however, those posts will be deleted without warning.

Very sad news.
Re: Hornet down at LN *note to members*
Well done to Sky News who have just covered the story, albeit briefly, sticking to the facts, showing the correct aircraft and not speculating as to the cause.
Re: Hornet down at LN *note to members*
Tragic news. They were so friendly, spent time at the fence with us on Sunday.
RIP.

That is sad news as the pilot is so far from his home, and only transitting.

Too many good pilots being lost at the moment. Blue skies and thoughts with family, friends & colleagues. Life can suck at times
Re: Hornet down at LN *note to members*
Just a thought on this sad day. I wonder if any members have any photos of the aircraft departing that may be of use to the accident investigators.
Re: Hornet down at LN *note to members*
Terrible news and condolences to all affected. I read that it was one of four Hornets to depart this morning. My question is, did the other three return to LN or did they carry on westbound?
edit: Just seen on FC that they either diverted to Coningsby or Lossiemouth. I must admit that in the circumstances I'd have preferred to have returned to LN or MH in order to be with my countrymen at a time like this. Although ultimately I'd just want to be back home with family of course.

Awful news, very sad. I haven't been on here in a few days and didn't realise there were any on transit through. Heard the news earlier and thought it was a case of reporters getting the aircraft wrong when they said F18.

Thread tidied up.
Speculation includes serials. The information requested could lead to unnecessary distress to a family in the US believing a particular jet was involved in which their family member may have been flying.
Andy made it abundantly clear what was requested regarding speculation, it will be deleted.

What has happened to the rest of the jets that left? I heard mixed reports midday (as always happens at first) about where they were heading after the crash happened and that they were looking to re-land in the UK.

Re: Hornet down at LN *note to members*
Several fora - including FC - have now published news articles which identify the pilot , although none of them originate from official sources.
