Battle of Britain Day

Post by planenuttoo »

Hi to all on Battle of Britain Day. Thankfully we have the freedom to use a website to moan like mad about all that we take for granted.

Let us remember "The Few", sadly they are getting fewer. This morning I will be attending a Service at the Battle of Britain Memorial at Capel le Ferne in Kent.

Attended the ceremony at the B of B Memorial this morning, the weather was perfect, clear blue sky and the coast of France looked close enough to touch. Just as we were about to start the ceremony, we heard the sound of a Rolls Royce engine and we were given a short display by a Spitfire, complete with invasion markings, Perfect  . Later, at mid-day, to put the icing on the cake, we were given a formation display by a 2-seat Spitfire and a Hurricane from the Heritage Centre at Biggin Hill, a perfect end to memorable day. Sadly, it would seem that the 'Battle' and 'The Few' have been consigned to history.

Yes, good to see UKAR marking the date with the title banner.

I work and socialise with a lot of German friends, and in a lot of German cities. Crazy to think that only 70-odd years ago we'd probably have been trying to kill each other.

PZ865 buzzed Norwich earlier this evening, presumably a Battle Of Britain Day event in the city.

Dan, there was a flypast at County Hall this evening, being the return of NCC's annual Battle of Britain commemoration following the 'restoration' of County Hall. The Hurricane spent about ten minutes holding over the Showground in Costessey, the sound of its Merlin being almost ethereal in the evening air, before heading east to County Hall.
