If Norway require a maritime helicopter, they already operate the Merlin in the SAR role, so why not acquire more?

Presumably because they don't fit on their 4 remaining frigates

Horrendous traffic at Teeside today. Covered in that thread but I thought it was worth popping here too so more of us see it.

https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-tees-61769579

What baffles me (in some ways) is how this got so bad.

At RIAT, there are at least twice as many people each day and literally no main roads leading to the site. Now, I realise that there are multiple entry points and a much much larger parking area at Fairford than at Teeside, but the RIAT traffic management is, by and large, excellent.

Even Cosford - where I have only been once - that has one road in and out, wasn't that bad!

The organisers at Teeside seem to be hiding behind the fact that they told people weeks ago to make extra time for their journey. But to me it seems like they just didn't have adequate traffic management in place (and no, I'm not an expert, and no, I don't expect I could have done a better job, and yes, I'm sitting in an armchair as I write this. Just so you know...)

Maybe there's only one way in and out - I don't know, I've never been - but I really feel for any poor souls who were actually going to try and catch a flight from Teeside today!

According to Tiktok posts, which of course are always completely reliable...the police didn't know about the event and no traffic management plan was ever implemented.

The U.K. needs to hurry up and sign a contract to replace the Pumas with 149s. As Leonardo have confirmed as part of the offering that all military AW149 production will move to Somerset if they win the tender, every delay in the decision means that more and more AW149s will be built in Italy rather than Yeovil.

H175 to be built at Hawarden if Airbus win the contract. It's all political posturing and still avoids the biggest issue...that the Blackhawk was the correct choice in 1985 and will still be in 2025 when the first NMHs are delivered.

It’s only my opinion, but I think the Blackhawk ship has sailed. The Blackhawk design itself is pretty old, and given that their replacements are well into testing/development phase. Yeah, so is the Chinook but there isn’t really a comparable replacement yet. A decent decision in the 1980s, but arguing for them now is like arguing back then that we should be ordering Hueys for combat ops.

Plus, from a selfish/spotter view, I don’t want everything we own to be American. It all gets a bit tedious!

Afraid I need to disagree there. HH-60W only just rolling off the production line in the CSAR role, UH-60M may be a decade old but it's still an absolute workhorse that doesn't seem to be fazed by anything the US Army throw at it, MH-60R is becoming the defacto standard for frigates and destroyers alike with the failure of the NH90 project.

Then there's the spec ops variants; DAP, the weird stealth thing, etc. Find me a Puma that can do that - the Romanians sticking a minigun in the nose doesn't really cut it!

All fair points (I think the Westland-built Blackhawks even had a primitive DAP config?), but I just can’t see it.

(Not arguing for the Puma, btw - it’s old and much as I love them, time to go).

RIAT traffic management hasn't always been great. I well remember sitting for hours in chaotic queues failing to gel into organised exits while genial but incapable volunteers waved randomly at vehicles. This was at a time when the Mildenhall Air Fete exit was managed excellently by base personnel despite a lack of major roads (we did mention this on RIAT feedback forms and suggested getting them in to help)! The Gloucestershire Police refused to do traffic management stating that the cost of their hire was for safety and law and order only (both of which I thought they were responsible for without extra funding?) and it was only after a separate police force was hired specifically to do traffic management that matters reached some sort of competence. Or so I heard, anyway.....

The bottom line would seem to be that traffic management is actually a very specialist matter that requires experts giving it their full attention and for all I know modelling of what is achievable.

There's two in that scheme,

Could you clarify the registration of the second aircraft in the yellow scheme? Would you also be able to advise where and when it was painted? I only ask as the cost to paint G-BYXH was quite substantial, hence can't see why they would paint another one at this time?

the MOD don't seem to want to release the report in to the effectiveness for some reason.

Have you requested a copy from the MOD? I only ask because as of a fortnight ago, the formal report into the trial had still not been released to the RAF

There was a couple of other schemes as well though, that have been returned to the standard white with blue stripe. Make of that what you will.
What I make of that is that G-BYUE (blue/black scheme) and G-BYXG (steel blue scheme) were wrapped in vinyl as opposed to being painted, due to cost. You will note from various pictures on the web that on both these aircraft, the flying controls remained in the standard white (not covered in vinyl) whilst undergoing the trial. The vinyl covering had a set life for it to be fitted to the aircraft structure, hence the reason it was removed on completion of the trials.

Surely both of the others were black? Unless XG had a separate trial scheme to black?
