Maybe all airshows should follow the Marham Enthusiast Day model. Not much damage done to the environment with that one.

After this summer - which seems to be a wake up call for many for what is coming down in years to come.

I wonder if airshows will be regulated against first or (ironically) moved away from the height of summer!

So we had a good summer this year for the first time in ages - no rain in June or July - so lets ban airshows.
Your justification for this is …… remind me. I think we have had 3 pages discussing what impact airshows have on climate change compared to everything else.
Sorry if you think I am being a bit blunt but I cant take your post seriously
:dizzy: :dizzy: :dizzy:

ps we are back to having rain again so you can rest easy :tumbleweed:

pps we are still waiting for you to post the link to the article that you referred to back in June that prompted your soul searching

Frank,

Please read the first post - it is in simple English.. "Please - if you don't think climate change is real please don't post! - this is not the place"

Sorry, I missed the point where somebody put you in charge of what people are allowed to say on an open forum.

Well Dan,

I'm not. But,

As I wrote the first post I asked that people comment on the line of the post. If you want to be a denier there are many other places to go and discuss this.

Quite simple really!

If it bothers you that much, stop going to airshows.

I think it might take a bit more than me stopping going to airshows to halt climate change.

My movements of course will have only the very slightest effect and not be noticed against the background of the emissions of the other 8 billion people !

I sure most well informed will know that to have any chance to stabilise by 2C most models need a lot of negative emissions - and soon! From technology that currently doesn't really exist!

Every year we do nothing the steeper the cuts will have to be.

Aviation (and airshows) wont be exempt

Andyph,

While I never like to predict anything at all, I will say this, on the eve of the 2010 RIAT (I believe it was) as I drove away from the East view parking area I was tuned to the local radio station. The local news came on and prominent among the Bulletins was RIAT. They had on a short interview with a local representative of the Green Party. I can't quite recall, but I believe, not at all unexpectedly, he listed his credentials as an aeronautical engineer in order to establish the thought that he knew what he was about. Even further away from the unexpected, he attacked RIAT for hastening our planet's demise by filthying up the air. He described the event as 'frivolous'. Now I don't know if he perhaps trained as an aviation engineer and suddenly got the climate change bug, but of course he certainly wasn't a fan, he wouldn't be sacrificing a fixture on his Summer Calendar if the Fairford Airshow was indeed banned. However, I don't know how many Rock Festivals and such like he had attended or how he got about, he wasn't pressed on this by the programme's interviewer, but I imagine the thought of banning all such gatherings, Glastonbury et al, had never once crossed his polarized mind. Of course it came as no surprise to find someone of his like making sweeping demands for air shows to bite the bullet in particular. Its straight forward enough when you don't give a toss or actually hate the damn things!

I personally think we should have more airshows in the UK, as you say not many emissions produced at these events, what next ban Formula 1, Stockcar racing etc. If it gets to this pitch might as well live on another planet!!

Formula 1 - Definitely! There is a lot of fuel used moving that around the world for just enterainment .
Maybe it is me but fires this year in California, Greece, Portugal, Sweden etc etc give a taste of what is coming. Think of the loss of life and damage done here.

If you want airshows stopped because of a few fumes, why on earth are you wasting people's time posting your gibberish on an airshow forum?

Actually I think this is a rather good topic for debate, and it has been gnawing away at the back of my mind for some time.

Let's face it - whether you agree with it or not, whether you like it or not, there are going to be big changes in lifestyle coming for most if not all of us, all largely driven by the need to be seen to be doing something about climate change. And you can bet that things which generate a lot of emissions for 'entertainment' purposes, like airshows and (yes) Formula One are almost certainly going to find themselves coming under a lot of scrutiny.

Consider this: aside from families looking for a jolly, what is the key demographic of airshow enthusiasts? 40+, overwhelmingly male? Is there a cohort of younger enthusiasts coming through which will robustly defend the airshow when (not if, when) it comes under scrutiny? I'm not convinced there is.

As the key airshow demographic ages and (ultimately) shuffles off, the up-and-coming demographic (those entering the workforce now, say) are precisely the demographic who have grown up with the climate change stuff rammed down their throats almost since birth, and who are not going to be in the least sympathetic to preserving the joys and the hobbies (even that word seems somewhat outmoded) of the 'male, pale, stale' brigade whom they blame for everything from Brexit to ruining the planet. To borrow a social media phrase which I loathe, airshows are seen as very much a 'gammon' pursuit, and consequently represent easy pickings for anyone looking to be seen to be doing something to tackle climate change whilst also scoring a few brownie points to bolster their own right-on credentials.

It's not going to happen overnight (mercifully), but I would posit that the airshow's days are numbered. At least in its current, traditional format.
Posting comments on an aviation-related chatroom, are ya? Looks like it an' all...

I can soon see organisers of events where people are going to travel great distances to attend and / or where the events themselves can be seen as harmful introducing some kind of 'green aid' contribution to the ticket price much as you often see gift aid these days.

I don't think you understand the point of the thread. I'm not calling for anything!

Of course the meatheads are going to say ..."This thread just makes me want to see 10 B-52’s scramble at RIAT in thick black fumes!" and such.

I am bringing up that Climate Change is the biggest issue for humanity and Airshows will be affected - like it or not!

as an aside - and I know it is none of my business - but you seem to have some depression/anger problems - I'm not judging - but you have a very black view of people and the world - you can get help :)
