New Forum Section Needed?

Post by Ken Shabby »

It’s been good to welcome the Duxford Diary and WS788 Restoration threads to UKAR in recent days from their now sadly desecrated former home  . They are brilliant additions to UKAR and hopefully will attract more fellow enthusiasts to the site and forum.

I was wondering if a new forum section could be created specifically for ‘Projects’, where ‘ongoing’ threads such as these and the Phantom Restoration and People’s Mosquito threads could live, rather than be spread across the Aviation Waffle and photos sections. A dedicated section might also attract other restoration projects or museums to create their own threads in which to post news and updates. Aviation Waffle could then be the home for ‘one off’ type discussion threads.

Just an idea. Mods feel free to delete if you think it’s a truly awful one, though.

 +1

That's a great idea. Such a section would probably be my first port of call, each time I visit the forum.

Do you think threads should only be started by 'representatives' of the project in question, or should anyone be allowed to start a thread on a project that doesn't yet promote itself here...?

That’s a good idea but perhaps it’s best to wait til the refugees have all settled over here- the Meteor thread is a sort of homing beacon! UKAR is a big forum and not everyone will know to go to the waffle bit! Ont old forum everything was on one page which made for a bit of variety too

I decided to stick the 788 thread in Waffle as there isn't another obvious place for it on here; for example its about the engineering and restoration process rather than just pretty pictures, so I don't feel the 'Warbird and Classic Jet Photos' section is the place for it. I also shamelessly followed the placing of the F-4 thread, as it seems similar in nature to what I'm trying to present.

I think a 'Restoration Hangar' section dedicated to all things spanner waving is a great idea, and I can think of at least one other ongoing YAM project which would find a home there.

We’re discussing the possibility.......

The Duxford diary however, will stay in the photo section as it is a photo thread

We’ll keep you all updated

I would support that idea, as one of those who migrated mainly to follow Blue_2 and the Meteor.

If a new section were to be created I would happily split out any NAM restoration / work posts into the new area.

Also don't forget that it's for FREE admission on Saturday 23 & Sunday 24 November at NAM as part of the #NationalLottery25 #ThanksToYou campaign! Full details about how to take up the offer can be found in here http://www.newarkairmuseum.org/Thanks_To_You_19

Not sure that it counts when it's FREE!

That said I fully expect that you'll be heading south from the barren north to take up the free offer - after all it's in the DNA! (I'm allowed to say this sort of thing as my late-father was born in Sheffield!!") :hide: :cuppa:

While we would, of course, fully support the mods and abide by any decision they make, our concern would be the lack of footfall in a specialist section. Aviation Waffle is one of the busiest parts of the forum and therefore allows us to share updates etc with a larger section of the readership.

A while ago there was some discussion over the long term future of the forum. Having thought long and hard about this, my suggestion would be, not a new section, but remove either the whole general discussion area, or just remove off-topic. That way 99.9% of the arguments and bitchiness simply wouldn't have a base.

Nope, it just means you can't say what you want on a private forum used by a tiny percentage of the population. Feel free to debate anywhere else. I see Iain's point but with the lack of activity elsewhere Off Topic has probably been keeping the site busy.
