Google Streetview plane-spotting.

Post by Stonefaction »

Based on an idea that is ongoing over on BirdForum, and ideal for these days of few active movements passing overhead and lots of boredom - I suggest some Google Streetview Plane Spotting.

Easy to do - find identifiable aircraft on Google Street-view and post the type and a link to the screen view (click on the three dots and select "share or embed image" and you will get the link).
Rules are simple - photos must be "Google Street View" images (not "See Inside" or "Street View" images from other photographers). Ideally, all photos should be from outside the airports/airfields and NOT a type posted already. Bonus if you can catch aircraft in the air. The Blue Angels are in the air over the Florida Keys, but I couldn't find them on a quick search before posting this. I've also seen a Bell 412 in the air somewhere in Japan and a Varga Kachina in a garden somewhere in Angus, Scotland.
It is also sometimes possible to change the date (clock icon on info square), which can give a different selection (I counted a total of 23 possibles at Dundee Airport but haven't posted them all).

A few to get things started -

Antonov An-26/Cessna 208 (Entebbe Airport, Uganda) - https://goo.gl/maps/XSR1qQzs2Suucyq69
Cessna 172 and Piper PA-28 (Dundee Airport, Scotland) - https://goo.gl/maps/CLeAfRuesEaKzkCt5

Start here - https://goo.gl/maps/rbNoA7R5FkwwL64w8
(Pima County Air Museum) and work your way along the road/fenceline.

Lots to see. Typed up a list of what I found, more or less in order, only for it to be lost as I'd been automatically logged out. Lots of highlights and surprises though.

Highlights incuded - CH-54, CH-53, Mi-24, CH-37, H-5, HUP-3, CH-21, HH-52, HH-43, Mig-29, Mig-21, F-8, A-7, A-6, EA-6B, RA-5C, A-4, A-3, Gnat, Lightning, Hunter, Jet Provost, EC-135, VC-137, KC-135A, FJ4, F9F, F-3 Demon, TF-102, P-2, C-97, C-123, C-133, R4D-8, Shackleton, F-4J, F-15A, T-38, T-2, T-1 Seastar, B-58, B-57, B-47, B-52D, B-52G, Etendard, B-66, Alpha Jet, Tigercat, T-37, T-38, Jetstar, J-6, Boeing 747, Boeing 777, Boeing 787, CH-46, L-049, EC-121, Nomad, B-23 Dragon, Super Guppy, H-34, H-19, F-5A, Mystere, F4D-1, Jaguar, Starship, S-43, F-27, B-36, EA-1F Skyraider, E-1, C-124........(and others).

Damn.....I didn't even look at that, as those sort of views are usually "See Inside". As you say, very cool - and you actually get great views of pretty much everything...... ah well, I enjoyed the challenge I inadvertantly set myself.

The internal views of both wouldn't count as they aren't actual "Google Streetview" images. However, Monino exhibits are largely visible from outside.

It's slightly cheating, as I've been along the road a few years ago - I took this from our minibus in 2013!

Former Athens IAP at Ellinikon which closed in 2001 you can still see a Hellenic BAC-111, and Olympus 747, 727 and 737 parked on the ramp https://www.google.co.uk/maps/@37.87967 ... 312!8i6656 more details and photos here https://aviationanalyst.co.uk/2019/07/1 ... l-airport/ seems the redevelopment has been somewhat delayed.
