The social aspect will be missed the most, RIAT is probably the only time the majority of UKAR staff meet each year

There are still a few into August and September which are yet to cancel.

With the talk of social distancing being in place til a vaccine is available at the end of the year, I'd be surprised if there are any air shows at all this year.

The RIAT arrival thread. Always entertaining.

This gives me an idea, how about a livestream next week, play some RIAT arrivals footage first, then run the full show and then some departures footage afterwards, might be an interesting way to fill an afternoon? Could possibly do it with the 2012 show

Isn't 2012 the one with the Black Eagles. Then yes please.

I'm missing the build up to shows, participation updates and counting g down the days. With RIAT in particular it'll be the camping i miss most.

Paul we are absolutely at one on this! 'Tis in all respects a comprehensively awful year.

PS Mind you I don't do the camping thing, I stay at the same "Hotel" in Swindon all the time, arrive Thursday depart Monday, each via the East Park and View. On the Monday, I usually head off from the Park and View and transit down to Newquay for a few days to stay with some old friends. Make a big week of it. Used to take in the Culdrose Air Day an all. And every other year, if it landed right, Farnborough on the road back.
Certainly saving some wedge this turn round.

Everything regarding RIAT. The weekly aircraft updates on my phone during my lunch break. Setting up at Totterdown and seeing/socialising with friendly faces who I normally see every RIAT week. Getting a rest from the wife and kids. Hopefully Cosford which is my local show may still go ahead in September.

It was yes! If I get enough interest I'll run one next week. BTW I'll be doing a test stream with 30 minutes of departures from RIAT 2011 on our Facebook Page at 6pm today https://www.facebook.com/wingstvchannel/live_videos/

I attended the Friday last year (rather wet) and still had a good time. Why? Spending time with friends.

As others have said - the social aspect, meeting up with friends, simply chatting to the person next to you, who you have never met before, but both with a common interest.

That can be a minus as well as a plus, the last ting you want is someone saying 'so do you think the red arrows 'll be on later?' You know the type.

Just the general excitement of attending an Airshow and seeing the Red Arrows and The RAF Typhoon Display amongst others.

Rolls-Royce Merlins! In a normal year even in the week there's quite often a warbird floating about the country with that deep-throated hum, but this year I haven't heard one, for obvious reasons. My soundtrack is missing.

I don't not look forward to these, but honestly, as they are, year in year out, all there is, apart from the Tutor, BBMF and the Falcons. Not to mention the attendant hype, merchandising, over exited pre-amble from commentators about how noisy the Typhoon is, it is all indicative of how small, stretched and limited the junior service is.
As this is the centenary year of the first ever RAF organised air show, the Hendon Aerial Pageant on 3 July 1920. I wonder if we might just have had a glimpse of the rest of the RAF's still not entirely unsubstantial inventory, like the long gone Golden era. Could we have perhaps looked forward to the F-35B, Hawk T2, the new Texan? The Atlas, Voyager? The also new Phenom and Prefect?
I imagine I'll attract all the usual self appointed expertise on service operations and priorities about operational commitments and principal role of the junior service. But .......ah well, role on 2021, fingers crossed!

The chance to chat to aircrew generally as most are aviation enthusiasts too; but in particular, the chance to ask the Americans what they think of their current commander in chief.

Silver Biplanes gleaming in the evening sun while another act trundles by gently bobbing up and down over the grass. Special evenings
Re: What will you miss most without airshows this year?
For sure I will appreciate any show much more when they do restart. The moans about this or that not being at Riat etc! You know who you are. Hopefully we will all be thankful just to be watching any aeroplanes!

I will miss the entertainment given by the totally predictable self obsessed and uninhibited bickering on the RIAT 2020 thread. Other than that I will really miss attending the show with my recently departed and long term friend who was unfortunate enough to catch Covid 19 and have COPD.

That's terrible, puts it all into perspective. Hopefully you'll be able to look back on the good memories in time but that's horrible to hear of.mushbuster wrote:I will miss the entertainment given by the totally predictable self obsessed and uninhibited bickering on the RIAT 2020 thread.
