Announced a few days ago by the Austrian government and appearing in the press yesterday.
The Austrian Air Force will be retiring the SAAB 105 without procuring a replacement. Instead, flight training will be carried out abroad.
The little ‘105 has been a popular display item in the UK for a number of years.
In addition, the Austrians want to retire/replace their Typhoons. However, due to being locked into the contract - they can’t.

Austrian SAAB 105 to be retired
Re: Austrian SAAB 105 to be retired
Very sad - always liked seeing the Saab 105 display - a charismatic and punchy little type that was always very well flown.

Ah I'll be sorry to see it go. Austrian 105's have been appearing at shows as long as I've been going, and specials aside are even in the same scheme as when I first saw them. That, however, is a heck of an innings.
Shame they're contracting out. Such is the way now.

Hopefully they will last until July next year as they would be such an appropriate item at the RIAT 50th bash having been there from the start as Nigel says virtually unchanged.

I wonder if they would be made available as civilian flyers? (Checks lottery numbers...)
Re: Austrian SAAB 105 to be retired
From what I've read, they'll cease flying in December 2020 so sadly they won't get the public farewell they deserve.capercaillie wrote: ↑Wed 08 Jul 2020, 8:20 amHopefully they will last until July next year as they would be such an appropriate item at the RIAT 50th bash having been there from the start as Nigel says virtually unchanged.

A couple of years ago there was talk of them being used for spares recovery back into Sweden.
