Warbirds Over Scone 2022 (**UPDATED 03 Apr 22**).

Post by GeorgeP »

The first 'real' airshow that I have attended since the beginning of the pandemic. Sadly, the weather that we were hoping for, and which had graced previous events, did not materialise. The Saturday was a mixture of light showers and low cloud but this did not greatly affect the schedule. Sunday was a complete wash-out with showers and, at times, a cloud base below 800' AGL. Despite the poor weather, four P-40s (I believe it was the largest gathering of P-40s in Australia since the end of WWII), three Spitfires and three Mustangs participated. The star of the show was the Fw-190; wow, what a beast!

In addition to the above star-studded list were some T-28s and T-6s/Wirraways plus a few smaller trainers. Last but not least, the world's only airworthy Hudson, an Avenger and an ex-RAAF Caribou completed the best list of warbirds that I have seen in this country. I'll post more images as I process them. All taken with a Canon 5D IV & Canon 100-400L Mk II or a Canon 6D & Canon 24-105 Mk II. Thanks for viewing!

Nice them George!

When did you get such a good warbirds scene?
Remember when Aussies were a little jealous of what we had over the ditch
No Longer!

Bet the Temora Warbirds Downunder will be pretty awesome -

Thanks for the comment, Andy. Yes, we are slowly catching up to you blokes across the ditch but I reckon that a healthy warbird community in both countries is the best outcome for enthusiasts like us. Warbirds DownUnder should be a great event and I have convinced my long-suffering wife to accompany me to the Temora event in October.

I look forward to meeting you at next year's Omaka show.

Fantastic variety of warbirds, some very rare. The weather was obviously frustrating.

Many thanks for posting

Wonderful photos George! That Flug Werk 190 is in such a gorgeous scheme and it's great to see it get so much action, and of course I love your photos of the two RNZAF veteran P-40s. What a great selection!

I thought that it was a genuine German-built WWII machine albeit without the original engine. When I researched it on the local register, CASA recorded it as a 1944-built machine. Happy to be corrected / educated further. TIA. Agree ith you re: the colour scheme.

The way I understand it is that it's Flug Werk FW-190A-8/N s/n 990004 with parts of Fw-190A-8 WkNr173056 incorporated into it. I've mentioned the misconception that VH-WLF is a Focke-Wulf to Aussie friends who have written for magazines or done airshow commentary and they replied they always went to pains to explain it's a new-build.

Thanks for clarifying the status of the machine.
