Classic Air Force Vintage Air Display - Coventry 2 May 2015

Post by CameronSys »

Hello!

Saturday 2nd May will see the Classic Air Force hold a Vintage Air Display at Coventry. Details to be confirmed soon apparently!

Finally an airshow I can walk to in 5 minutes and avoid traffic!

Might be worth the trip depending on what's going on and the price. There's potential for some decent gems in the display.

I'm certainly going! Especially as it's only a 5 minute walk from me!

I would think there will be 2 or 3 jets and as many of their props. Would be cool if they could attract aircraft from other operators.

Given the fact that it is XH558's last year it would be cool to have that displaying - especially seeing as there is an AVRO Shackleton being restored here at Coventry. Oh yes and a Vulcan B.1 at the MAM.

558 never displays before June.

And the last complete B.1 was chopped up at Cosford in the 1980s.

My apologies, a B.2 at the MAM. Don't know why I put B.1!

Hopefully after a few years the vintage air display can expand into a full airshow like the good old days! Although probably not too likely but you never know. Either way, I hope there'll be a great turnout to persuade them to do the same next year!

If anyone is driving in and they see someone walking down to airbase a while before gates open that'll probably be me ! I hope to be the first on the crowd line.

Here's a thought if the CAF powers that be are reading:

Is there any chance that RVL would allow for a Dakota display perhaps with a flypast when spraying like the L188 in 2003?

Maybe a bit of speculation on the participation list is in order? How about; 2 x Meteor, 1 x Vampire, 1 x Venom, 1 x Jet Provost, Dakota, Dove/Devon, 1 x Dragon Rapide, Prentice. Shackleton taxi!?, Nimrod engine run. Chipmunk?, Anson? We can but hope but sounds promising and I'll deffo be there....

Probably right I should think ^^^

WR963 should be taxable by then (?) and will probably taxy I would think?

XV232 Nimrod was down for a taxy the weekend after so they may move that to the 2nd of May and give us a taxy too hopefully!

Could be an amazing display! A couple of unique formations would go amiss either!

to be fair - they applied for this sort of thing a few months back. Although when I say this sort of thing, I don't mean an airshow! Was a bit of a surprise as I wasn't expecting anything like an airshow. But maybe a practise or two!

Hopefully this will continue to be yearly thing and grow each year!

Fully agree Cameronsys... it's great to see another event emerging on the horizon that is nice and local (for me - Rugby). Thinking slightly topically in terms of a different thread, and maybe putting 2 and 2 together to make 7... Was there more strategic intent to the move back to Coventry 'for winter maintenance' for some of the fleet?

Not looking to start a 'he said, she said' discussion, I'm just curious.

Will be attending.

Yes - all flyers are based at CVT from now on apart from pleasure flying at NQY!

G-DHDV Devon flew a strange flight yesterday which looked a bit like display training / testing. And had abnormal call sign 'tiger 1'.

Pretty safe to say that the Devon will be in the flying display

Tiger One is the personal callsign of Dan Griffith. Probably just a training flight, getting him current on type again.

Ah right - thanks for clearing that up!

Given the fact that the Devon is on the promo photo - I assume it will fly on the display anyway.

Hoping for some more training flights next week whilst I'm off for half term!

Good noises about the Twin Pin in the winter issue of The Meteor, so possibly a maiden flight due soonish?! Would be nice to see this in a display!

Surely not - new wing struts and engine rebuilds required - or so I was led to believe?

Surprised me too, but they wouldn't publish that if it wasn't going to happen?

That might have swayed the balance for me. I haven't seen the NF11 fly for ages what with WA591 stealing its thunder! Depending on the cost and WX it sounds like it could be a nice and relaxed afternoon.

The Dove/Devon - call it what you like, would be nice to see 'n' all.

The A46 traffic is very bad lately with all the roadworks going on just outside the airport.

That's a fair point about the traffic, the A45 near to the airport has roadworks and Tollbar End island (you would use it if coming from the M6 or M1 or M69 for example) is very bad ATM too with traffic and will be until 2016. If you are coming, give yourself a good bit of time for traffic or approach from stoneleigh / Kenilworth would be my advice.
