“Echos of the Past” - Rougham, Sunday 5th August 2018

Post by RCTAM94th »

This Sunday we will be hosting our biggest event of the year, “Echos of the Past”. It’s a day to celebrate and remember the men and women of the USAAF who served at RAF Bury St Edmunds from 1942-1945.

Sadly the days of the OFMC Spitfire & Mustang duo or Sally B buzzing the “bend” on our airshow days are long gone, but we will have plenty of activity on the ground including historic military vehicles on display as well as the running of a static Rolls Royce Merlin engine.

The Control Tower Aviation Museum, which tells the story of the B-17’s from the 94BG as well as the local history from WWII, will also be open.

Admission is £5 for Adults, £2 for Concessions and Under-16’s while Under-5’s are free

Gates open at 10am

Sounds like an interesting event. Incidentally - why are the days of warbirds at Rougham long gone?

The death of Sir John Agnew in 2011 is the main contributing factor for the end of the airshows and other events staged on the airfield. Also added with the fact that the housing and industrial areas of Bury St Edmunds are consuming more and more of the airfield site, sadly staging an airshow again wouldn't be viable.

However the airfield is still very much active with the local flying club being as busy as ever, so hopefully flying from the site will still continue for the foreseeable future.

The hot weather helped with a successful event yesterday as well as more military vehicles arriving then expected. We also managed to have one historic aircraft fly in yesterday in the shape of the this gorgeous Leopard Moth.

We're already looking at ideas of incorporating a historic aircraft fly-in for next years event, which will be on Sunday 4th August.
