Maybe no display that weekend at DX but lots of action as I can’t see all the flyers being Sywell based; much easier to take off from DX, display and return. Not far in a straight line.

F1 at Silverstone is currently same weekend, P&R is usually in Northampton, traffic may be fun

Where's all the 1000's of visitors cars going to park?

Let's pray that they've thought of that!

And the museum will turn it into an 'Events' weekend and charge extra to get in.

Just seen that, looks like TFC have massively cocked up with the date here. Moving it to a venue that close to Silverstone and holding it on GP weekend is just plain nuts... :astonished:

Well, I won't be going now because of that, as the route to get to Sywell for me involves going up the A43 right past Silverstone...!!

That was my thought back in the autumn when the idea of it being Sywell was discussed as an option. The fields used for event parking on the east side of the road will hold about 3500 cars......and if they can use the field where the solar farm is, maybe another 1500+ cars can be put there, and its a short walk to the airfield......
But after that most were suggestion the Northampton P&R facilities used for the GP would likely be used, but that's not going to be an option now by holding it on GP weekend....!!!

Oops, not a good idea! Although both venues are 25 miles apart and totally different directions off junction 15a of the M1, it's going to be a nightmare of a journey for those like GeeRam who have to come from the south using the A43..

Even anyone coming up the M1 from the south will have problems as they will get caught up in the Northampton Park n Ride traffic heading towards Sywell.

From the north or midlands, you'd have to use the A14 across towards Kettering and then down towards Sywell to avoid GP traffic.

Anyone coming from west of London and in the Glos, Oxfordshire, Bucks, Berks, Wilts areas will have either stay overnight or take a huge detour towards London and via the M25 and A1 etc or like me just forget about it.

I'm surprised there isn't a ATC issue to holding Legends at Sywell on this weekend with the proximity to all that GA and Helo traffic into and out of Silverstone (and usually a Reds display) - especially if they are considering continuing with the Balbo concept.......??

Indeed! If I go (and if it actually takes place anyway) my preferred route from here is head by local roads to MK then up to Wellingborough on the A509 and swing a left there.. We shall see?

Yes, if it happens Covid permitting, I'd have to take the more time consuming route via the A418 through Aylesbury, Buzzard, MK and via the same route.

Probably add a good hour each way to the journey.....we'll see.

IF it does go ahead I'll be going via Aylesbury to pick a friend up en route. We could always meet up and go in one car if you like? Long way off yet tho'.

I'd be surprised if the locals will be happy, I seem to remember that they managed to delay the building of the concrete runway for quite a few years and isn't there also a limit, to the number of movements allowed each day/week?

An article on Scramble website https://www.scramble.nl/military-news/f ... -at-sywell

Includes possible layout and potential restricted areas....not set in concrete

Well I was originally quite keen on the idea of Legends at Sywell. But if its on GP weekend then, like GeeRam, I'm snookered coming from the South West. Should have gone for later in July.

Wow.....

They can't surely be considering the reduced space yellow/red option with a curved display line, as that curved yellow line goes right over the western car park fields which are the only options for parking, so where the hell do they propose people park?
And will it being GP weekend you can now forget the nearby Northampton park n ride options as they get used for the GP.

Even the bigger blue area (which I thought would be the only possible option) is much reduced over what is available at Duxford, so the red/yellow one would be a very reduced attendance projection.

I've never been to Sywell but from what is being said, it seems an ill-considered move especially on GP weekend. What (if anything) were they thinking, or I wonder if there's something that hasn't yet been made public?

What has prompted the move away from the convenient (if money grasping) Duxford. Has there been a bust-up between TFC and the IWM?

Well we look forward to welcoming you to Sywell especially people who’ve never visited before- it’s very exciting for us all. Though we at Sywell Aviation Museum are the complete opposite in size to IWM we hope you’ll pop by!

Never mind the parking and road traffic - speaking to a mate who lives a couple of miles away from Sywell, it's apparently very well used by private aircraft over GP weekend.

Out of all weekends they could've chosen, why this one?

Realistically, where would any potential shuttle bus run from? Cambridge to Duxford shuttle was handy coming up from Stansted area.

IWM wanted a much bigger piece of the financial pie off of TFC to host Legends......see the other thread from back in Aug/Sept.

It is baffling.

Hotel prices already pre-jacked up in that area being GP weekend, so more expensive for people (and harder to get a room)

If Bristol Channel area or further west or south-west, then yes, this would be the best option.

Had a quick look at the location and checked SunCalc to determine the sun position during July. Light could be a challenge after about 12:00, as I found at Duxford, if the display line is along 03/21. I acknowledge that it's not all about photography but that's why we're all members of this great forum.

Please excuse my ignorance, but is there a reason why it couldn't be held at OW? That place seems to be one of the best airshow locations in England; lovely grass runway, historic buildings, beautiful afternoon light... If they also have good beer, it would be a no-brainer. :grinning:
Cheers,

George
