Udvar-Hazy (Smithsonian) - up to '45

Post by iainpeden »

The Udvar-Hazy centre at Dulles Airport, Washington DC is the “displayable storage” facility of the Smithsonian Air and Space Museum. The downtown museum reopens this autumn (fall) after a massive refurbishment.

Just a small selection below.

Some great shots there, I would love to go there one day, just to see the Axis aircraft that the facility holds!

I wouldn't mind betting that this museum wont be disposing of these due to duplication!
...and pray that there's intelligent life somewhere up in Space cos there's bugger all down here on Earth!

Very true - if you have had the chance to look at my posts of the NMUSAF you will have noticed the 3 Phantoms, 2 x F-82s, 2x Constellations, 3 x c-130s etc! (FOUR Sabres!!)

I was going to post the exact same thing, strange to see an aviation museum that seems to think aircraft are the main attraction...

I had the pleasure of seeing a number of these aircraft on a tour of the Garber facility, DC in 2000, the previous NASM storage and restoration facility. A fascinating trip, clearly a much better experience now, with much better views. But without the Indiana Jones sense of adventure you got walking through 8 or 10 sheds crammed with artifacts, trying to understand what you were looking. You genuinely felt as if some thoses things had been untouched since arriving after WWII.
