International Sanicole Airshow, Belgium (10-12 September 2021)

Post by Chrisse »

Following the unfortunate cancellation of the 2020 airshow , we are preparing the 42st edition of the International Sanicole Airshow at Hechtel-Eksel, Belgium.
To spread visitors out, the airshow will also take place on Saturday 11 September, in addition to the Friday evening sunset airshow (10 September) and the Sunday airshow (12 September).

There will still be a spottersday at KB.

More information will be announced in due course.

I'm going to have to check how much Chimay Blue and Duvel I can bring back to the UK!

La Chouffe was the tipple of choice the the last time we were at Sanicole. Highly recommended!

A real shame it clashes with Melun.

Those who have registered to our newsletter will have read the news already...
The Swiss air force is heading our way with 2 of their wonderful displays: the F-18 solo display team and the Patrouille suisse.

This is excellent news. Providing international travel is allowed, I'll be there.

So no static as Sanicole only looks a 600m runway? What happened to Kleine Brogel as an airshow?

So no change to the usual Sanicole with only helicopters / light aircraft on static display, as has been the case for decades?
The Belgian Air Force are still planning their official airshow, which will be held at Florennes Air Base in June (COVID pending).

Yes, plus the Tigermeet / Spotter's day at KB.

Happy you like our Sokol-ed helicopter news (Can you guess who is responsible for our cringeworthy puns?).

In the meantime, to save you registering to read what has appeared in the local press in the Limburg part of Belgium about the concrete plans for the 2021 show, let me give you the main points.

Planning on how to set up a real-life event in 2021, while still allowing for covid19 measures, started in September. A plan was devised and checked with authorities, whose feedback was positive and led to concrete implementation.

-Saturday added to spread the crowd across 3 days.
-Instead of 40000 visitors, we are working to 5000-7500 each day.
-The audience will be placed seated on 5 properly separated stages. Each of these will have a maximum of 1500 seats.
-Social distancing will be implemented as necessary according to social bubbles.
-Distancing between will be guaranteed with prior assigned seating.
-Each of these 5 stages will have its own catering and toilets to limit contact to the bare minimum.
-Depending on requirements at the time, each of the 5 sections may also have its own entrance.
-If allowed, there will be a tradestand boulevard behind the sections with compulsory walking directions like we have at local outdoor markets.
-When not seated, a mouth-nose mask is compulsory.
-If allowed, static display will be at both the east end and west end of the showground. If required by authorities, this can be with timeslots.
-To avoid restless children on the stage, there will still be a playground.

Rest assured we will bring more information before ticket sales start in June.

Is that set in stone? The idea of a stage sounds incredibly restrictive for photography though of course I appreciate the effort to bring any event.

In the UK they are planning for an end to all social distancing restrictions during the summer and I had hoped that it would be similar in Europe.

Are there still plans for a Tigermeet / Spotters Day? That is the main attraction for me.

There are still plans for the spottersday at KB yes, but I don't have any info on how they plan to manage the audience.

The stages at Sanicole, yes, they will be there. Remember, social distancing between bubbles so nothing will be cramped.

Today we heard with great sadness the loss of Don Verhees. Don was a retired Colonel of the US Air Force, but the aviation and airshow world knows Don as a Tiger and a friend and in addition to us a true Sanicole ambassador.

Our next airshow will be a Tiger airshow, because in September we will be celebrating the 60th anniversary of the Nato Tiger Association, the 70th anniversary of the 31 Tiger Squadron and ... we would be celebrating Don's 80th anniversary.

Sadly he is not given the opportunity to celebrate this together with us, but Don, we will honour you in September and we are convinced you are looking over our shoulder as our guardian tiger. Have a safe last flight and we will miss you! Tiger Tiger Tiger !

I'm hoping we can get a few types that we'll miss out on otherwise.

Belgian C-130, Norwegian F-16 & German C-160 are the ones that come immediately to mind.

This year we’ll also be celebrating the 75th anniversary of the Belgian Air Force and the Belgian air force will be sending along their flagship displays, including of course the F-16 solo display. Closer to the date, we'll know whether it will be with the Dark Falcon or the anniversary jet.

Also, please note that the spottersday at Kleine-Brogel has been ‘extended’ to include Monday 13 September on top of Saturday 11 September so you can see the departure of participants in the NATO Tiger Association anniversary celebration.

That is great news. Do you know if there will be a dedicated Tiger Meet spottersday in the week prior to Sanicole? Really hoping that travel from the UK to Belgium is allowable and practical in September.

My (limited) understanding is only Saturday and Monday.
On Friday there will be a jobday for highschool pupils (and the close KB neighbours) as usual.

We are very pleased that the Hungarian airforce will make a welcome return to Sanicole after 8 years with its JAS-39 Gripen solo display promising us lots of afterburners and flares!

Great lineup so far. Hopefully the headaches of traveling from the UK won't make it impossible to attend.

French Hawkeye anyone? Can't tell if it is static or flying from the email - but going on the runway length I assume flying

Flying indeed, the French navy are unlikely to donate a gate guard to us :D
