Swedish air force airshow 25th of August, 2018

Post by Gripenfury »

Hi everyone!

The Swedish air force main airshow will take place on August 25th at Uppsala just north of Stockholm.
The organisers are expecting 120 000 visitors, that would make it one of Swedens biggest events.

Not much information have been released yet but here is what I know as of now.

Confirmed participants:

Swiss Air Force Super Puma Display Team

Swafhf:
AJS 37 Viggen
J35 Draken
J32 Lansen x2
J29 Tunnan
J34 Hawker Hunter

This sounds really interesting. Has anyone visited this venue before who could comment on the setting?

It hasn't been an airshow at Uppsala in the past 17 years so hopefully someone who went there can answer that.

This is an odd venue as its not an active flying base now, home to the Air Force School. Runway is 21/03 so same as Waddington with crowd on the Eastern side though the administration area with static etc is a fair way South. Given the bizarre set up at Malmen anythings possible!!
You caaan't trust the system... Maaan!

There certainly doesn't seem to be a lot of information around online for this show, other than a Facebook page which I can't see as I'm not a FB user. A couple of days in Sweden does sound nice though so I've booked a hotel.

The gates will open at 7 am and close at 5 pm.
Both parking and entrance will be free.

Can we expect Norwegian AFHS Vampires, MiG-15 and CF-104D here?

Normally, non-swedish participants are very rare at SWAF shows.

Well we've had more and more international acts The last couple of years. Amongst others the breitling wingwalkers, redbull BO105, Czech Hind(alien paint scheme), baltic bees, Breitling Jet team, finnish F-18 hornet, danish F-16, finnish NH90 and PC 7 team.

So fingers crossed there will be something foreign this year aswell.

I noticed on the website that they are now taking applications from spotters and the media to gain access to an enclosure 'adjacent to' (caution Google translate used!) The flying display as well as an opportunity to access the static display before public entry. I wondered if anyone had experience of this at other venues who could comment on how worthwhile it is?

Well the spotter site for Malmen was great. Although I did not go inside there was a bus to bring people to it from inside and everyone's seemed to be happy with the service provided.

Have used it at Lulea, Ronneby and Satenas in the first half of the last decade. If I would go again to a SWAF airshow, and had the possibility to use that enclosure, I wouldn't doubt a second to sign up. What you get is basically specific to the base involved, but you always get a few possibilities you don't get if you are part of the general public.

Well, that is always dependent on what they decide to offer. In the past they had stairs positioned in front of special colors, walking around the operational aprons, clear views of the static. back in those days there was also a free lunch. Mind, this was not at this base, but you can be assured it will be worth it.

Access to static before the public was let in. Bus from static area to viewing point by runway ie Naughty field view. But it will be different at every event

My crew and I booked our hotels and flights to Sweden. Day later (sunday early morning) we are flying to Warsaw, for Radom. Let's hope event in Uppsala will be good.

Finally program is out! NEVER in my life I saw more conspiracy, secrets, waitings about program and at the end we get absolutely (!) expected program! After many many years, they have two Viggens - AJS 37 SE-DXN and SK 37E SE-DXO, and there will be only AJS 37. Wow!

Really glad it's finally out. It's not at all bad, though I'm not sure what some of it means!
