Gdynia 43rd Naval Air Base Open Day 2019

Post by Mr. Crusher »

13 July, Gdynia Babie Doły Airport, flying line-up includes Team Iskry, Mig-29 and XA-41 display team (hope it will really happen), Su-22, F-16 and many helicopters. For sure one of the most interesting events in Poland this year.

It is good to hear something about SU22 and Mig29  The program sounds cool :)
I hope that they will not forget Aerobaltic later on.

Had a great time at the event despite the rainshower towards the end. Some terrific machines in the air and the crowd seemed to enjoy the static too. I know, photographers may have been upset that people could just crawl all over the planes in the static but I really enjoyed the laid-back atmosphere.

Very nice Su-22 twin seat with tiger markings along the nose on static.

Watched the Su-22 pair role demo rehearsal on the Friday from outside the base with a friend (on the mound) along with some of the helicopter role demos and Team Iskry rehearsal. The show on the Saturday was a reasonable relaxed affair, with amazing access to the aircraft present on static - most were open for interior visits in the glorious morning sunshine. The Polish C-130 was particularly popular as was the grey/orange Mi-14 'Haze.'

Because of the ease of access to the aircraft, obviously photography was limited and you had to be extremely patient not to get members of the public in your shots.

Weather closed in a little and it did rain during the afternoon display, but everything seemed to fly. The Team Iskry for example seemed to perform a high show even in the rain. The cloud was high enough for them to loop etc. The Su-22 pair role demo on the show day featured the release of small flares right from the climb out on take off through to virtually the last pass.

My gripe for this show was how far away the crowd line was from the action. Everything seemed to perform way off into the distance. This was particularly noticeable during the helicopter role demonstrations, where people were being dropped off onto the ground and later re-boarding as part of their displays. The 'drama' of those displays was lost because they happened so far away from the fence line.

Other than that, it was a free show... A long walk from the foot/bicycle entrance, but a good array of Polish Army/Navy helicopters and great to see the F-16 demo, my personal highlight being the Su-22s.

I'm off to RIAT now, but will look to post some photos in due course. Must have missed the Black Hawk from the US Army... I only saw the static Apache.
