Great Yarmouth cancelled

Post by Southendnick »

The Great Yarmouth airshow next year has been cancelled this is due to a shortfall in parking charges of around £200,000 meant the event was far more expensive than expected.

A series of aerobatic displays will run next summer instead.

That's a real shame. What's your source?

That's a real shame to hear. Reading that article something doesn't add up though.

It brought in revenue of £151,000 but expenses were more than £730,000, the BBC was told.
...
But about 180,000 people are thought to have attended the free-to-attend show over the two days.

I am sure a lot of those people were either the same person going both days, or children etc. But they couldn't manage to get even a pound from each 'visitor'? Are they simply talking about the contents of the coin buckets?

Free to view seaside shows rarely cover their costs - it's all about bringing in visitors and generating economic impact for the local area. Great Yarmouth quoted an economic impact of £10 million this year, which is very bullish. Other similar events hosting around 180,000 spectators would expect between £2 & 5 million E.I. Council funded displays are coming under increased pressure as budgets are tightened and this is likely to continue. But it is a shame to lose what was obviously a well supported event.

As has been said, MOST seaside airshows loose money for the council, the traders are the ones that make the money, many are not local (trade stands) the events are hosted in the hope people will return another day to visit other attractions in the town.

Oh I totally agree I'm sure they never expected to break even let alone make a profit from the event itself. Glad they still seem to see the value in having air displays though rather than canning the whole idea.
