Bournemouth Air Festival 2019

Post by Reds Rolling »

29th Aug - 1st Sept.

So with no Red Arrows appearing, just what will BAF have to offer this year?

Hopefully the return of the Typhoon at least, and perhaps another foreign display team?

I live a few miles away but I've not been to this event. I'm not really a fan of seaside airshows.

I would have thought the organisers would have been after the Breitling Jet Team again as replacement for the Red Arrows - unfortunately Bournemouth is not on their calendar..

Looks like SWAHF J35 is confirmed according to their provisional schedule for this year.

Will be great if that is the case. Have you got a source?

Rest of the line-up looks a tad thin for this time of year.

MiG-15, too?

Their website hasn’t yet been updated (unless it is done as I type), but that looks like about as good a classic jet gathering as one can muster in this day and age!

A 'Stella' lineup - is that a parade of wife beaters?

Seriously, there are some real choice items there. The Draken and Ultimate Fighters team are A-list. I genuinely hope the general public realise this, and that the lack of Red Arrows doesn't mean lack of an airshow.

How is the Draken allowed to fly if the Swedish pilots don't have the correct DA?

Just been onto them as I thought Breitling were appearing and now they've disappeared from the schedule. Many years ago I was phoned up by Jim Maitland on several occasions asking if I had shots of various things appearing at the Battle of Britain show as they got confirmation.......MONDAY; "Have you got shots of Patrouille de France".....yes Jim will send them over. TUESDAY; " Never guess what , we've got Frecce Tricolori coming now , do you have any shots of these?" .....(me very excited ) yes Jim will send them over.
These teams were requested and confirmed at the last minute, so I think it worth a call to Frecce' , wouldn't that be amazing.

Well the Draken has really put the cat among the pigeons. I wonder if the CAA have relented and are allowing them to do over water displays this year.

You'd hope so or that'd be a pretty bad booking by the team

Although many may have already guessed the schedule for the RAF Typhoon is;
2x displays on Friday (1x Afternoon, 1x Dusk)
1x display on Saturday
1x display on Sunday

The jet will also be departing/returning Bournemouth Airport for a display in Dartmouth on the Saturday and Sunday

I haven't been to the Bournemouth show before. Anyone got any tips on the best vantage points? Is the VIP package worth the money?

Depends what you want to see, The clifftop near to the datum line is very good for low level passes and the road is closed so plenty of room to stand. They have a beach assault demo on the closed beach section most years but last time the only actual air involvement was 2 Hawks circling round nowhere near it.

If they have the jetpack men probably about 20 yards from the pier (assuming they get that far!)

Apart from the steps down from the cliff there are no intermediate levels you can stand so it's at beach level which is always heaving with lots of hospitality tents / bars / funfair etc to block the view, but that's where the trade stands are

As a local I always find the cliff top the best place - not as busy, slightly more enthusiast-orientated than families, and for Aircraft that go to 100ft (Typhoon etc) the aircraft are usually the same level as you or lower meaning they are landlocked (or sealocked!)
