No Time To Die (James Bond trailer released)

Post by HeyfordDave111 »

Now, i've seen this trailer around 7 or 8 times now to try and get a 'handle' on it all, and match it in with reports from interviews over the last 18+ months with writers and actors etc regarding the 'feel' for the film.

Well, the trailer looks good........ photographically that is.
Rumour has it that Bond gets married and retires, and we get a black lady actress to be 007 in future movies, having seen a black lady '00' in this film trailer.

Who knows, as these things are obviously tip top secret (only Earl Haigs wife, wife's tennis partner etc have a need to know), but it would be an 'interesting' side step from the traditional Bond, and i wonder if, having read reviews online if it's not going a bit too far in the direction of political correctness?

Lots of comments coming through on various blogging and review sites about it looking too 'Woke' and its worth looking for Dave Cullen's you tube review and thoughts too

If you see the trailer i'd be interested in your opinions, and oh, where he jumps if the bridge, look out for the safety wire  , no doubt that will be digitally removed before release.

Well from here after, it isn't James Bond. Effectively that's the end of the franchise. I imagine a lot of people who don't chime with Bond movies will go and see it and any subsequent ones starring his replacement. Those who are genuine Bond Anoraks will probably call it a day after this one.

No hard and fast rules of course. Clearly the aim is to try and stand a stereotype on its head completely, and one imagines the 'with it' film makers think they've mastered (or mistressed) a seamless transition, rather than taking an axe to a rather more grounded type of comic book hero, as Batman or Superman.

Nice to see the band wagon has started before the film has released. A black MI6 agent!! a female Double 0 agent!! oh, the hand wringing, oh, the outrage. Is nothing sacred.

Any Bond fan worth their salt will point to Thunderball (1965) that showed female double 0 agents . Considering the various environments that under cover agents have to work in, the idea that they only employ white, middle aged men is obviously pretty silly.

The continuing success of Bond is partly down to how the series has evolved in parallel to how culture has changed. This leads to friction and this leads to character development. Skyfall was the most successfull Bond ever and played big time on this : "what were you expecting, an exploding pen? We dont go in for that anymore." and from Goldeneye (1995 a huge hit) : “I think you're a sexist, misogynist dinosaur, a relic of the Cold War.” and we saw the introduction of a female M - 34 years ago...

Thirteen years ago, we saw a black actor play Felix Leiter in Casino Royal and it was a non issue.

So the Daily Mail will have it's fun with the outrage and Mail readers will follow as they just love being angry but most will go along and hopefully enjoy what looks to be a very promising movie.

Calm down pbeardmore, you've just rushed straight at what you thought I'd posted. Quite simply, James Bond is an identifiable, if fictitious, character. he can no more be female than Lora Croft a man. And that, is simply my point! Your reaction was wholly predictable!

The thing is, James Bond is still James Bond, a white male.
007 isn't, and theoretically has no need to be either white or male - it's just a number which is passed on when the previous '007' retires ( which is what's happened in this film ) or gets killed off ( which, if I recall correctly, is what's happened in at least one previous film )
You'll also notice that the film franchise has always - again, as far as I recall - been '007' not 'James Bond' ( or even just 'Bond' )
Besides, from the trailer it's impossible to see just how much of the film is 'James Bond' and how much is 'female 007'.

That said, they could just as easily have introduced a female as one of the other '00' agents because they've appeared in earlier movies ( if only to be killed off by the baddies ) and established a separate franchise for that character.
After all, it's not as if we haven't had other 'female secret agent' movies in recent years, is it.

Where this might just work, and bear with me here, is if Bond (as mooted by Waller-Bridge) is retired, married with his love interest, BUT, the '00' Franchise gets a try out with a Black Woman with her '00' number which isnt 7.

A standalone film, to see if it can emulate Ripley, or Black Widow, or indeed Lara Croft etc.

That could work well, and could lead to a totally new franchise with 'crossover' movies where 2 or more '00's' come together to save the world.

Sorry B.C., just saw your post.

No issues at all with the directors creating a new franchise about a different 00 agent, and a cross over with James Bond/007 is, I think, a good way to do it. If however the idea is to turn James Bond/agent 007 into a something he's not that's where people will have problems. James Bond is 007. Even when a new 007 is appointed he is always called James Bond. People watch "Bond films" not "007 films".
On a different note, there's an Aston Martin V8 in the trailer!

I’m a “Bond anorak”.

Remember when everyone shat themselves because Daniel Craig has blond hair and they were like YOU CAN’T HAVE A BLOND BOND! EURGH. YOU’VE RUINED IT! #NOTMYBOND

And then everyone went to see the films and thought “ok yeah fair, he’s pretty dece.”

It’s an on-going work of fiction. The writers and creators can do whatever the hell they like with the character.

Ian Fleming wrote the character originally as a dull and uninteresting Hoagy Carmichael-esque figure. The movies have stripped that away and all. They’ve given him depth, emotion, conflict, grief, and all of the rest of the compelling traits we’ve come to love.

Just enjoy things for things. Black woman? Yeah, why not? If they kick ass in a well-written, fast-paced, well-directed movie, what’s wrong with it?

There was the The Bourne Legacy that didn't have Jason Bourne in it.

Friend of mine was a Bond geek......he used to bitch like mad about the film-makers using Aston Martins.
From what I recall, the Bond in the books drove a Rolls-Royce.
He also moaned about all the gadgets, which apparently also weren't in the books.

Was it a proper coach-built Bentley too, or one of the later mass-produced R-R owned ones?

I stopped watching JB films when they ran out of Ian Fleming books to film. I bought 'The Man With The Golden Gun' (I'd already read all the others) when it was first published, therefore a first edition, which according to a recent Antiques Roadshow is quite valuable now. Sadly I left it with my girlfriend at the time which was only fair I suppose as it was her who got me into James Bond in the first place, and she'd lent me all the earlier books to read (paperbacks) which I did one after the other in the order that they'd been published which I suppose makes me a bit of a Bond geek too?

I know!
Imagine wanting a popular award winning artist to sing your theme song. Much better getting some old has-been.

The BE decision has really divided fans. It's all about marketing and brand. Do they go for an "on trend" name or someone who is a more conventional fit for a Bond movie. Adele was perfect because she was actually both. BE comes over as too "cutting edge" for me. Anyone remember the QoS theme. It can go very wrong when you go for the "flavour of the month"

True, I suppose, but I imagine they've given it quite a lot of thought

Well, the new theme is out this morning. I think its rather good. Very James Bond theme in style, sound and atmosphere, and the lyrics set the scene nicely for the film.

Not absolutely my end of rock & roll, but much closer to it than Shirley Bassey  , so as part of the 007 package I'll give it a thumbs up.

Conversely i think its an 'ok' score, but my word its a dirge.

I hoped for a return to bombast, but got an 'end of film' song, not a shouty , fast paced rock out, which after recent films i think the franchise needed.

David Arnold does his best, but it just doesnt cut the mustard.

The new Bond song is dire, worse than having dysentery on a packed tube train stuck in a tunnel after eating the worlds biggest curry with your boss sitting next to you and the bird you fancy the socks off sitting on the other side
