6 Nations 2013

Post by Monty »

Off to a cracking start today with two great games!

Thought Wales looked very poor for the first 50 minutes and despite coming back strongly for the last 30 still managed to butcher a few very promising situations. Wasn't until the game opened up a lot that they started to play and looked like Ireland switched off for 10 minutes after their very quick try at the start of the second half. I expect Wales to produce a big performance against France next week now though. Ireland were clinical with their chances and dominated the breakdown in the first half. Their defense in the second half was immense at times as well, would put them as outside contenders for the title this year.

England looked like they had made another step forward. Controlled the whole game and played with excellent ambition as well. Thought the mistakes leading to the Scotland scores were disappointing and something to work on still. However England's game play now looks much more Southern Hemisphere in style and if we continue to play the way we did today I think it will be difficult for anyone to beat them. Scotland looked a good team and took the chances presented to them very well.

Will be interested to see France play tomorrow after getting a lot of praise for their Autumn performances (which i admit i didn't really see much of!). Hoping Italy can provide an upset a la 2011!

What did everybody else make of it? And who is going to win the tournament?

France to win the whole thing for me providing they play to their much praised abilities. If England keep playing like that (big if) they'll give anyone a good run for their money. Wales have been pretty average recently and I cant see them in the top 3 if they keep playing like the first 50 mins vs Ireland. The Irish are the dark horses for me, they certainly have the potential but they're far from consistent atm. I can Scotland beating Italy for the places at the bottom and I think the game vs could be very close indeed. Haven't seen much of the Italians play but we'll soon find out how much they've improved, if any. Good start to the competition so far (unless you're Welsh or Scottish  ) lets hope it continues in this direction.

Scotland are known for their abilty to slow and harry at the breakdown. Today that attribute of the Scottish game was missing. England were positive and confident at the breakdown.

England do seem have pushed on since the All Blacks win, the other positive was the substitutions did not noticeably disturb the England game.

England are by no means the complete package, but that win indicates a step forward. Next week will be a sterner test in Dublin against the Irish. Ieland winning away in the 6N indicates a team of potential and Ireland's first half display against Wales was impressive. Ireland's second half was less controlled, but they held a determinded Welsh comeback. Ireland did not play well away from home and yet earned a win, that speaks volumes about a team.

I hope todays game of Italy v France is just as good as the first two games this weekend. I believe with France still lack consistency, the French teams of old could one week be unstoppable, and the next week the same team can leak 30 points. That French inconsistency always throws the All Blacks, as they normally have an effective gameplan against most teams they just can't make a gameplan against the French!

totally agree Stratocaster, just as long as the Italians don't send the same team as yesterday, - We're doomed.

Oh how I mocked the Italians when they were entered into the original 5 nations line up to make the 6 nations, one man wiped the mockery off my face,Bergamasco! To be honest,I think we're facing bottom spot once more! I used to know Jim Telfer's daughter Louise, wish they were still in the social circle because I'd find out what Jim Telfer really thought of that game if you can call it such!

I think that the Italians threw themselves into the game against the French and it did appear that a few injuries did occur. These injuries may not be very serious, but the Italians don't have the strength in depth to lose their first string players and not have an effect.

Scotland are not that bad. The second row, and wingers and fullbacks are some of the most dynamic players going. The front row is quite formidable and the back row was disrupted on saturday by the very early replacement of Strokosch after his facial injury.

If the Scots can use those good parts of their game as a springboard then the win is just around the corner. Do the good things better and improve the bad things the win will come..

Well that France v Wales game was dreadful! Wales were clearly the better team but neither really played. Defences were good but both teams were fairly one dimensional in attack so they could predict exactly where to defend.

I think todays game will decide who is going to go on to win the 6 nations based on the performances so far.

Well, that was a pleasant surprise beating the Italians! I'll not be too surprised though if we're humiliated next time!
