Officially scored an air to air kill against an enemy aircraft since their last in 1948.
Ok - it was a drone over Syria but it was a first for the Typhoon and ASRAAM too.

I expect MiG Eater will be along to dispute that!
Happy Christmas to the pilot, anyway. What were pilots awarded in WWI for balloons?

I thought RAF got a good few in the Falklands or was that the Navy with the Harriers?
Maybe the first 'enemy' but the first air to air 'kill' from the RAF in 73 years though, didn't they shoot down one of their own Phantoms in Germany?

No, a Phantom shot down a Jaguar with a Sidewinder. Pilot banged out safely.jasonT1981 wrote: ↑Thu 16 Dec 2021, 8:16 pmI thought RAF got a good few in the Falklands or was that the Navy with the Harriers?

They were flying Sea Harriers so the Navy claimed the kills.jasonT1981 wrote: ↑Thu 16 Dec 2021, 8:16 pmI thought RAF got a good few in the Falklands or was that the Navy with the Harriers?

This is the the first official shoot down.
There have been others unofficially though....
During the Borneo crisis a Javelin attempted to intercept an Indonesian C-130 which flew into the ground trying to evade being shot down.
One of the conspiracy theories over the stolen USAF Hercules incident was that an RAF Hunter shot it down (the ground crew claimed the aircraft took off with full cannons, and came back empty).
There was the Phantom that accidently shot down a Jaguar in the 80's.
Then an Iraqi Mirage F1 was destroyed on the runway in a bombing attack by a Tornado Gr1 in the first Gulf War - initially identified as a MiG-29, hence the nose art "Mig Eater".

As the Beeb say "It is the first time the British military has downed another enemy aircraft since the Falklands War nearly 40 years ago."
This may be a silly question, but do these drones ever carry defensive measures?
Hopefully the pilot will be bought a drink or 2 tonight. Not many with an air to air kill on their CV.

The pilot of "MiG Eater" Tornado, ZA447, initially tried to engage the Mirage F.1 as they were on the run in to Al Asad airfield. They crew noticed the aircraft in the circuit flying with its lights on, but couldn't get lock on with a Sidewinder. The US tried arming some of their Predator drones with Stinger air-to-air missiles. They tried to lure Iraqi fighters into the no fly zones during 2002. One Predator launched a stinger against a MiG-25, but the MiGs missile hit the Predator first.CJS wrote: ↑Thu 16 Dec 2021, 9:22 pmAs the Beeb say "It is the first time the British military has downed another enemy aircraft since the Falklands War nearly 40 years ago."
