Valkyries & Rocketeers at RAF Lakenheath

Post by LN Strike Eagle »

Trip out today to see the 'legacy Eagles' before they soon depart. Didn't quite work out as planned and only shot this pair, but there was plenty else going on with based Strike Eagles hot pitting, the visiting Seymour Johnson squadrons putting up jets and of course, the new boys from the 495th FS getting settled in.

Will add more in the next few days as I sort through them.

Does anyone know when the 'legacy Eagles' will be phased out?

If rumours are true, the last of the F-15C's with the 493rd will be gone by the end of February, some have already left and the next batch are the aircraft where the tail markings have been removed from. The 493rd will then stand down whilst it is re-equipped as the second F-35A unit at Lakenheath.

The Strike Eagle units will remain untouched.

These are cracking, mate. Hopefully we'll get some more of this cracking winter light over the next few weeks.

Thanks for the comments. Berf, as Andy said, Scramble are reporting that the F-15Cs/Ds will be gone from Lakenheath by the end of Feb, although I have also heard later dates mentioned so worth keeping an eye and an ear out for anything official.

As promised, here's a few more shots. All repetitive captures I'm afraid as I'm trying to get a decent record shot of every active jet on the base, and I've got absolutely no idea why. It was really busy with flights though, as all four based squadrons are home, as well as the visiting jets from Seymour Johnson.
