Indian Wildlife - mainly birds - Updated again

Post by Blackbird »

Recently back from a fascinating trip to India, centred around the "golden triangle". We visited the Ranthambhore National Park and were very lucky to see a tiger. I've had a going at identifying the birds but there are inevitably some where I'd appreciate some help. On with the show...
1. Vultures: Red headed; Long billled (L-R)
Image

2. Red-wattled Lapwing
Image

3. Plum-headed parakeet
Image

4. Black Drongo
Image

5. Asian pied Starling
Image

6. Tiger(!)
Image

7. Stork? Not sure which species
Image

8. White-throated Kingfisher
Image

9. Pariah Kite?
Image

10. Woolly-necked storks
Image

11.Possibly a variety of Woodpecker?
Image

12. Black-faced monkey
Image

13. Nuthatch?
Image

14. Black-shouldered Kite
Image

15. Help please
Image

16. More help please
Image

17. Samber deer
Image

18. Greater Thick-knee
Image

19. Spotted Owlet
Image

20. Black-necked Stork
Image

21. Another two unidentified
Image

22. Image

23. Oriental Magpie Robin

Your help and C&C will be appreciated, as is your patience. I rather suspect I'll come across a few more "unidentifieds" as I plough through c3600 shots!

TIA

Andy

Not bad at all!

9 looks to me to be a female or more likely a juvenile Oriental Honey Buzzard Pernis ptilorhynchus

11 is a female Brown-fronted Woodpecker Dendrocopos auriceps

13 is a Long-tailed Shrike or the Rufous-backed Shrike Lanius schach

14 is a Red-wattled Lapwing Vanellus indicus

16 is a female Asian Koel Eudynamys scolopaceus

22 is a male Mrs Gould's Sunbird Aethopyga gouldiae

23 is a Black Ibis Pseudibis papillosa

........ and the monkey is a Grey langur (or Hanuman langur) there are seven species all separated from what was not long ago a Nominate species and six sub-forms, this is most likely a Southern Plains Grey Langur Semnopithecus dussumieri

I'll certainly second that!

Many thanks for the help and comments. I'm pretty sure they'll be more to follow.

As before, any help with the unidentifieds and any corrections will be appreciated. I haven't done as well with this batch as I think I did yesterday

Lots of varied birdlife there Andy, of which I'll leave most to Nigel as he seems to have far better knowledge of this area than I ever will.

I'd guess your two Bulbuls are different species.

31. A barbet of some kind.
32. Some kind of chat or robin.
34. Looks like a francolin/partridge rather than a sandgrouse
35 and 38 look similar, definitely not a wagtail more similar to a sunbird
36 Egyptian Vulture

Looks like a Black Stork in the first post as well.

Someone will fill in the blanks I'm sure, but looks a great trip and an awesome tiger . how did you view it - vehicle, elephant, on foot?

Thanks for your help Capercaillie. We were on one of these-
Image

They're called a Canter and hold 14-16 people. At a guess, we were about 20 metres from the tiger. If anyone knows how to work it out if it's possible, the photo was taken at about 200mm focal length on a 7D, so equivalent to 320mm

25 looks like a female Blue-fronted Robin Cinclidium frontale the dark rump, vent and tail, plus lack of a supercillium discount the Wheatears found out there.
27 Red-whiskered Bulbul Pycnonotus jocosus
28 Grey Wagtail Motacilla cinerea
31 Golden-throated Barbet, Megalaima franklinii
32 Indian Robin Saxicoloides fulicatus
34 Grey Francolin Francolinus pondicerianus
35 Purple-rumped Sunbird Leptocoma zeylonica female
36 Egyptian Vulture Neophron percnopterus
37 Purple Sunbird Cinnyris asiaticus a scruffy moulting female
38 Little Spiderhunter Arachnothera longirostra is what I am fairly confident it is because of the 'heavier' bill, but several of the female Sunbirds are similar.

I'd go with most of those Nigel, but that's surely got to be a race of Yellow Wagtail, one of the blue-headed forms, its got a green back and a big obvious supercilium and relatively short tail.

This is my final batch, and I'm unsure about most of these...
A. This looks like a member of the crow family perhaps
Image

B. No suggestions for the next couple:
Image

C.Image
D. Brown rock chat?
Image

E. Unknown
Image

F. Unknown
Image

G. Sparrow?
Image

H. Unknown
Image

I. Green bee-eaters?
Image

J. Yellow wagtail or a spiderhunter?
Image

K. Also perhaps a wagtail?

Any help you can give will be much appreciated, and thank you for your patience.

A is a Rosy or Rose-colored Starling and C is a Cattle Egret,

E is a Magpie Robin?, G appears to be a Bulbul and H a Drongo, H is definitely not a wagtail.

Must go there at some point, too many other costs first unfortunately - house, wedding :hide: , appliances etc.....

Thanks again Capercaillie. I can thoroughly recommend a visit. Aside from the other wildlife and all the sights we visited (including the stunning Taj Mahal) we must have seen something over 50 species of birds. A lot of these were taken just wandering around the grounds of the various hotels we stayed at. Just to finish off, another shot of the tiger we saw.
