I'm wondering about the bloody wafer as well...

No, it isn't a pet - it was unearthed while planting bamboo (don't ask...). It was photographed and then removed to a place of safety...

Don't think that salamanders are a native UK species?

Thought it was a salamander, but perhaps it's a newt... I'm not very clued up on reptiles...

And no, I wasn't...

They're not. You've got one of the UK's most protected species there Mr Dan - looks like a female Great Crested Newt. It is illegal to move or disturb this species and so I have reported you to the authorities, expect to be grabbed by the heavies any time soon!... It's a great find for the garden, the local wildlife group or herpetological (nutters like me who love cold blooded slimy things like reptiles and amphibians) group would be very interested in knowing of it's existence. I don't wish to be personal but how big is it??

I think you're right. But they are not all 'slimy', a common misconception that some people have about snakes for instance.

We have loads of Palmate Newts in our pond (when I drained it a few years ago to re-line it, I counted about 60, I put them all back when I re-filled the pond again) but sadly no Great Crested Newts!
