The Land of Fire and Ice!

Post by RichPittman »

Hi all
As some will know I took a break from Aviation for a scenic holiday to Iceland a Week or so back.
I was probably inspired by Lozzas photos taken last Year of the Northern Lights.
Another inspiration was the 14mm Samyang after I have seen may great photos from Matthew Clements

I did have a few ideas out there, but it was a big learning curve photography wise.
Wanting to show the diversity of landscapes Iceland offers and
blessed with good weather I decided just to hit some of the more well known spots along the South coast.
I got lucky with the weather and Aurora activity!!!!

Some super stuff there - what time of year was your visit? I went in February about 10 years ago but never got to see the lights - I will definitely go again though.

Absolutely spot-on! There are several here worthy of a place on the wall.....maybe you need more walls? Particularly fond of the ice 'sculptures'.
For some reason I imagined that Iceland would be deserted, but those big waterfall shots got more people than a Dole queue on a Tuesday morning!
Then of course....the promo' shots of PRAT!
(A for 'atmospheric'??)

Some really awesome photos of the northern lights, great foregrounds! For some, in future, if you use bracketed exposures and blend them afterwards you can retain more detail from the landscapes because especially with northern lights it can be very tricky to get it right.

What are the locations in the photos - I'm going there next month so trying to gather as much information as possible - PM me if you like.

Fantastic stuff Rich, I was there in April and only got one night of decent auroral activity but managed to bag some nice stuff. An amazing country, it looks like you did all the foss's I did, Gulfoss was covered in snow while we were there and absolutely bitterly cold. Cracking rainbow at Skagafoss, it was lashing it down for us  Vik beach, I also switched to Black and white for a few. I'll get round to posting mine over the Winter when the job gets a bit quieter.
On my list of places to go back too.....

Some great shots there Rich.

Iceland is definitely on my list of places to visit - just need the kids to stop demanding things so I have enough money to pay for all these places!!

Bloody excellent set
Visited Gulfoss and Geysir 9 years ago while visiting my brother who was working there for the summer, out of interest, his team (re)built the wooden walkway at Gulfoss waterfall.
