what settings on canon 600d

Post by kianelle »

Can anyone help me out with some advice . Im new to photography and still lot to learn.
But can someone help out with settings on my camara that will help take the fast jets .I have two lens 400mm and 500mm because of my budget the lens are not the fastest on focusing on fast moving objects.and this was very obvious today .I live close to cosford so went down to see if there was any thing about . When the two euro fighters went over I used my camara ( canon 600d ) and 400mm to take pic only problem was the lens would not focus on the moving jets it kept re focusing . Found it very frustrating. ? im coming to fairford and I know im going to have same problem . So is there any tips someone can give me that will help and what settinings on camara will help the menu on camara is so very confusing .sorry for long winded post but wanted to fully explain . Please help

Which focus mode are you using on your camera?

What lenses are they? Do they have any extra switches on them at all?

The 400 lens is the one I used is a tamron af 200.400 mm .
it is af/m what is best to try and get the fast jets without it trying to focus all the time

Can you post an unedited photo with the EXIF intact, we'll be able to read the whole settings of the camera etc. It'll help us to help you.

Single shot focus should stop it refocusing but the speed of focus will still probably be a problem. If so you will have to go for manual focus. You can set it by picking something the same distance away as the aircraft is likely to be and focusing on that.

Trying to keep the aperture (F number) as high as you can without getting the shutter speed too low will help since then you don't need to be spot on with the focus.

400mm on a 1.6 crop camera (640 equivalent) might be a bit much for a beginner, a shorter, better quality lens might have been a better start point. You can always crop images down.

Homer ;
From the kianelle's second post :

I think it's a Tamron 200-400 F5.6 zoom lens , rather than a straight 400mm prime.

You need to focus at whatever zoom length you intend to take the photo at. If you're using AF , then it will simply refocus when you change the zoom length ; If you're using MF then the focus will be off if you change the zoom length.

You'll want the AF drive in AI Servo, so it tracks the plane. Single shot will be useless!

I know and I think a better quality lens, say a Canon 70-300 which you'd have got for a similar price would have been a better idea for a novice. The reviews I've read on the Tamron commonly slate it's slow autofocus. It's not always best to go for the biggest numbers. I would rather crop three quarters of the frame out than get no shot at all.

As for AI servo, it will only track the plane if you can keep an AF point on it. If you are like me and it's all over the frame then single shot or manual focus will get better results. As long as it's going across your view it should stay roughly in focus.
