48MP Image from a 24MP Sensor(Sony)

Post by Pen Pusher »

Well I hope the rumour is right but it would appear that Sony are working on a piece of possible firmware to upgrade the Sony A7II CSC to create 48MP images from the 24MP sensor similar to what the Olympus OM-D E-M5 Mark II can do.

The sensor takes multiple shots in slightly different positions moved by the stabilization system and then combines time in one High Res Picture. The source told me he saw it creating 48.9 MP images on the fly. Of course that features works fine when shooting still objects. The source doesn’t know yet if the tested feature will work as hoped by Sony. If yes than it could be introduced in a future firmware upgrade.

Sounds like a similar idea to the Hasselblab H-5MMS, which turns 50 mb into 200 mb. Sorry to tell you Brian but from my experience unless it's welded to a block of concrete, the gain ain't worth the hassle.

Been reading up on it as well and it would appear a tripod of a sturdy design has been required for that process. However Sony already do multi-stacking with High ISO Noise Reduction and the like, so maybe the Sony engineers can adapt that and pull something new out of the bag.

He hopes.

The new Olympus EM-5 already does something similar but I don't think there's much to appeal to avgeeks from this technology

Sounds exactly like what PhotoAcute post-processing software has been doing for years, for a burst of shots from any camera. Only, instead of using sensor-shift, it relies on micro-differences between each shot due to humans not being able to hold a camera perfectly still.

The catch is, PhotoAcute needs to know some characteristics of the camera/lens... and support for it stopped recently, so no new camera profiles are being created. Works great if there's already a profile for your camera though - or a profile for another/similar camera might work too.

Have a look at this. The technique is called Super Resolution.

I have not tried it for myself but it's there if I need it.

... and yes there is more to photography than just taking photo of aircraft

Interpolation was the old way, know doubt it's still the same way but under another name.

It is not interpolation - interpolation only needs a single image, and doesn't increase resolution...
