Post by stevebrodie »

All,
Looking for some advice on hiring a teleconverter for RIAT, using the following setup, anyone use a converter and which one would give the best quality overall.
D7200
Nikon AF-S 70-200mm f/4 G ED VR

Many thanks for any guidance / advice.

so I'm not export on teleconverters but i do know can bring their own set of issues. if you don't get the right combo you will lose the ability to autofocus for example.

if you are looking to hire a teleconverter you may be best spending your money on hiring a lens to give you the range you are after and cut out the teleconverter altogether.

I regularly use a Nikon 1.4x converter on Nikon 70-200 f2.8 and 300 f4 lenses and see negligible loss in image quality. Bear in mind that adding a 1.4 converter to your 70-200 f4 lens will
make it the equivalent of a 98-280 f5.6

I also have a Nikon 1.7x converter but very rarely use it - autofocus is noticeably slower and image quality takes a bit more of a dip.

I would certainly suggest a Nikon converter rather than third party, if only to be sure of compatibility.

what camera are you using it on? from what I've been told anything more than a 1.4 on a crop sensor will cause issues with the autofocus

D500 and D7500, both crop sensor. Crop sensor won't affect the autofocus and recent Nikon cameras can autofocus at f8, so an f4 lens with 2x converter (making it an f8 lens) will still autofocus (not sure about the D7200 though).

The Nikon AF-S 70-200 f4 plus Nikon TC-14E AF-S Teleconverter III is a good pairing. I use it all the time. Focusing is good and the image is still excellent with just a minute amount of degradation in IQ.
Used on D7200, D500 and D750.
Thoroughly recommended.
At airshows it still might not be sufficient for flying displays. I haven't used a 1.7x or 2x on that lens.
