3rd Party LP-E6N Batteries

Post by danspuggti »

Hi folks,

My 4 genuine Canon batteries for my 7D Mkii have given up/are giving up the game (2 are dead and 2 only charge to approx 50%).

I have a 3 week holiday in Canada booked for June (I dread to think how many photos I’ll end up taking!) so obviously will need replacements.

Can anyone recommend any good 3rd party batteries or am I better off forking out nearly £70 a piece for genuine Canon batteries?

Thanks,

Dan

Is this any good for you?I have a 7D and use a Duracell battery as a spare for it.

I can easily take 400+ shots on a day out and the battery hasn't let me down.

Hope this helps..

I use Duracell batteries too (different type though, for an older camera) and can attest that they are very good.

I would look on amazon though, as they’ll probably be cheaper. Also, if they do have them on amazon, check the price a few times a day - the last time I purchased some from them the price got cheaper and cheaper throughout the day, and reset the next day before gradually coming down again.

My 3rd party Sony batteries take more images than the Sony branded batteries.

I have quite a stock of the cheapest generic 3rd party LP-E6Ns, and they are OK, but not as good as the Canon original.

This surprised me, as back in the day of BP-311s I used to buy the two for a tenner batteries from 7dayshop and they were better than the Canon battery. Unfortunately (the last time I looked) 7dayshop weren't doing LP-E6Ns. However, considering the price of the generics elsewhere and despite their performance, versus the price of the Canon, its still a net gain. They may last half as long but they cost about 15% of the price.

The Duracell version is a new one on me, that might be a good compromise.

Fuuny you should say that because I've noticed that with other items on there too!

Thanks for the replies folks, I'll take a look

I have four Canon-branded batteries for my 6D and prefer to buy OEM batteries in the hope that they are very high quality and will last longer than generic brands hence offer better value-for-money. However, I do not have any evidence to support my buying habit.

What I can offer, though, is the recommendation that you take your next holiday in Australia. In the ex-penal colony, we can buy the original Canon batteries for under 40 quid. The only downside is that it's a bloody long trip to get here.

Yes a bit of a distance to go

I have only ever bought the 'official' Canon batteries but when faced with a potential £280 bill to replace all 4 of them I was understandably looking for an alternative.
That and I dare say that there'll be a 3rd party brand out there that (like with many things) are selling a battery exactly the same as the Canon one but without the Canon name on it and thus a fraction of the price.

Not sure if 400pics on one battery is a good result...
I use Canon originals for my 7DmkII and 1000 is easily achievable no matter the conditions (tested in winter as well).
I guess it's better to save a bit and invest in original batteries.

400 shots is my average on a day out and that barely touches either my Canon or Duracell battery, whichever I'm using at the time.

1236 shots taken at WWT Slimbridge last month which got the battery down to something like 40% from full. Most were taken on 8fps burst.

Duracell batteries last me several trips on one charge. I don't take thousands of photos most days, but a pair of them fully charged in the grip will last for several outings.

Hähnel HLX-E6N are better than the original Canon LP-E6N.

Those are another option I have looked at but they seem to get very mixed reviews

Do the 3rd-party batteries provide 'battery usage' data on the camera screen icon, please? I'd seen reports when they first came out that only Canon ones would indicate the usage.

Thanks

I have used a number of different Hahnel cells in a number of different Canon bodies over the years, and used non-Canon battery packs in a few camcorders (remember them!) and they all seemed at least as good as the original Canon cells that came with the cameras.

GIven Canon probably sub-contact the battery production out to a specialist supplier, I have always suspected the extra cost of using only 'Canon branded' cells is probably pointless. That said, I wouldn't buy any old 'cheap' cell off the web either!

One thing to check is the capacity of any alternate suppliers' battery packs - they may be the same size physically so as to fit the camera body, but may well have a very different charge capacity - so make sure you bear that in mind when comparing prices too.

I have six of the old 7DayShop LP-E6s. They used to show the battery level in my 70D, but they are fixed at 63% in my 7DII and 5DIV - even when they are 10 secs away from being too flat to keep the camera powered up. They were so cheap though, have lasted for years and give me just as many shots as a Canon battery so can’t complain.

My Duracell LP-E6 one shows the"charge remaining" and "shots taken" info on my 7D just the same as the Canon one does.If I use the battery grip then it shows the info for both,as long as I remember to register the info in the camera first.
I'll be using the grip with two batteries at Cosford due to having burst mode selected for most of the day, then single frame for the statics etc.

Thanks for the replies; this comment
"They used to show the battery level in my 70D, but they are fixed at 63% in my 7DII and 5DIV - even when they are 10 secs away from being too flat to keep the camera powered up"
is what I was concerned about.... but you probably get used to pre-emptively changing them so you don't 'miss a shot'.

I have several genuine LP-E6 and LP-E6N, some of the LP-E6 ones are over 10 years old, and the camera menu claims that recharge performance is poor, but they still work fine, so have persisted with them.

[I recently purchased a Canon 90D - this seems to have made massive improvements to battery-life, compared with earlier models (80d, 7dmk2)]

Cheers

Canon has announced that they’ve won a lawsuit against two eBay sellers for selling counterfeit “Canon” batteries. While 2 sellers may not sound like a lot, the fact that Canon even went after them is certainly going to give other counterfeit sellers some pause for thought.

I can say I wholeheartedly agree, I've got 2 Hahnel batteries which seem to last longer than my Canon ones.

I guess in the end it all comes down to individual choice and what you're prepared to pay.I've now got two Duracell LP-E6,and I know I can comfortably get a full day with just one, that's an average of 400+ shots, single frame, depending on the subject.I always have a spare though.

I ordered 2 of the HLX-E6N batteries and must say they are very good
I will see how long they last compared to the Canon ones with my average usage/recharges.

I will be ordering 2 of the Duracell ones the end of the month as a second 'set'.
