Duxford Battle of Britain Photography Evening ~ 15th September 2022

Post by Pen Pusher »

There were various scenarios based on war time photos like 3 Hurricanes parked on the airfield, a Spitfire with a sports car next to it, a Spitfire outside the Watch Office, passengers boarding a Rapide and a flight crew in front of a Blenheim. There were plenty of living history actors, dressed for the appropriate scenarios but I preferred people free shots. There were originally only a Spitfire and Hurricane doing engine runs but ARCo added the Museums Mk.1 and the only downside for me was that they were using LED light panels, instead of lightbulbs as used on the last two engine runs I’ve been to, and the LED lights gave a strobing effect on the rotating prop’s. In the order taken and all hand held.

The 3 Hurricanes look impressive, as does the Blenheim.

But from what I can see, you were confined to standing behind the fence for the engine runs? Seems a bit silly not to position the photographers in an arc to make the most of the space available and allow people to shoot from lower angles which the fence would prohibit. I hope those attending are feeding this back to them.

Sounds like a recipe for disaster...

On a previous night engine run the gates were left open to allow the 'togs to get low angle shots but with the strict rule not to cross the 'line' of the gates. This evening the decision was taken not to open the gates...

Brian,
They used the same floodlights at the Duxford In A Different Light night shoot last year.

I didn't suffer the strobe effect in my shots... (Olympus E-M5 MkII)

The issue with the "Strobe" is the refresh rate of the LED's. If you did say a 2 second exposure you would have not had that.

I've used exactly the same camera and lens on all the engine runs at Duxford. Having checked the only difference is shutter speed. The others I took hand held were at 1/10sec and these were at 1/13sec. Must remember slower shutter speed in future.

Did you also have the anti flicker on the camera? That can also have an effect.

The mirrorless camera has a silent shutter and a mechanical shutter. On silent shutter you get the strobe effect and mechanical shutter you don't, I found that out when I got my first mirrorless camera yeas ago. I had it on mechanical.
