There is a slight incline as you move further back as I recall at Fairford, so yes, if you aren't on the fence you won't have a 'clear' view of the runway, but the further back you go you get slightly higher so you'll be able to see at least an idea of what is about to take-off....plus commentary will tell you anyway
It really is only the initial take off you miss. As soon as they're airborne you can see just fine if you're back a bit.
I'm not a big photographer (about 5' 8" actually...) but I just plonk myself down somewhere back from the fence (when not in the grandstand) and the view is just dandy.

Anyone think there is any possibility of arranging a collection bucket in the FRIAT reception in memory of Colonel Oleksandr Oksanchenko for families of those killed in the 831st Guards Tactical Aviation Brigade or indeed the Ukrainian Air Force? Perhaps there is a FRIAT person with good connection with RIAT? Would need a bit of work with some sort of notice or banner printed out...
Did you manage to talk to Wendy about a collection? I imagine there might be some Ukr. related collections going on anyway, just wondered...
No been travelling so no time.was hoping another friat person may pick it up but the suggestion was too late. A pity really as It is what friends would do and would be a good gesture towards the unit
I’m being told that the RIAT aircraft engineers are/have arranged a tribute to the Colonel somewhere on one of the western aprons due to their close working with him and his support crew.
Thought people might like to relisten to our podcast interview with Tim Prince - an absolutely enthralling listen. Great for that drive out tonight or tomorrow morning
Worth having a look at Andy's exclusive interview with him as well from 2014 as he stepped down from running the show. Properly good stuff.
Despite RIAT’s best efforts, USAF support for the show, E-4 aside, is pretty average, but it’s made worse by the fact that there have been confirmed-then-cancelled items like the A-10/Heritage Flight (ok, self confirms)/B-52s.
Shame about the B-52s but that's always the risk I guess. TBH, there have been very few cancellations this year so we've been pretty lucky. But yeah, to have one of the stars pull out is a shame, no doubt about that.
