Airfix 1/48 TSR-2 diorama *** FINISHED ! ***

Post by BFA »

After a cheeky bid on Ebay I ended up with a rather nice 1/48 TSR-2 kit and a shed load of aftermarket resin parts that came in with the deal.
The mission here is to do a fairly long build on this and eventually this will form part of a 1/48 diorama of XR219 on the pan at Boscombe down .
I'm no expert model maker and to be honest this amount of after market parts is something I would not of bought had they not come with the kit , it's kinda scary !
Hopefully I can do this some justice over the coming weeks and probably months without too many mistakes , but either way it's going to be a good learning curve :)

Here's what arrived in the post...

Nice big kit , plus the added extra of having 3 sets of decals in the box ...

5 CMK resin sets
Air brakes , cockpit , bomb bay and wheel wells , front wheel well and rear engine exhausts.

reference material sorted ,

I've been pottering away for the last week on this , so got a few updates already.

The CMK cockpit resin set.
I didn't like the seats on this so I've picked up a set of Pavla resin seats to replace the CMK ones.

Seats

Pilot and nav panels

And finally here's how it sits as of this evening ... panels and seats are not fixed in place yet , I'll hold fire with that till later in the build when the fuselage halves are joined.

Cheers guys :)

Started test fitting some of the resin parts into the fuselage last night .
There will need to be a degree of fettling involved to get the resin parts fitting nicely , although the standard kit parts fit like a dream.
Next stage , once I have a good fit on the main undercarriage / bomb bay and front undercarriage bay will be to paint and detail them before installation.

Mini midweek update ....

More parts arrived , lol
Canopy correction set , pitot tubes , bomb bay equipment detailing and a set of metal undercarriage ... I think it's going to need the extra support from the metal with all this added weight !

I've dry fitted the main gear bay and front gear bay and started detailing the wheel wells.

Managed to get the bay all finished.
Got to say that I like the fit of these CMK resin parts , they really look the biz too
I've also added a couple of extra bits of wire and stuff just to jazz it up a tad..

Cheers guys , I'm hoping it will all turn out well ....

Today I started a little side project that is connected to the TSR2 .
As this will be going onto a diorama I need props and scenery for it , finding 1/48 kits of ground vehicles is near on impossible and when available quite expensive.
A few days ago I took the plunge and bought a cheap 1/43 ( near enough in scale) vintage Dinky tanker off ebay for £10.
It arrived today in all it's played with and abused glory :/
I took it apart , stripped all the paint off with paint stripper , gave it a re spray , added some glazing to the windows , raided the decal box and gave it a little weathering.
Turned out looking pretty good.

As it arrived this morning.

Back to the TSR2....

A job I have been dreading , cutting out the airbrakes .
TBH it wasn't half as bad as I have envisaged , a good sharp scalpel and plenty of sanding was all that was needed.

Rear airbrake cut out

Top airbrake cut out
Image
Top airbrake cut out by Dorsettrooper, on Flickr

As you can see the fit on the rear airbrake wells is absolutely spot on ! only the tiniest bit of filler will be needed on one side which was probably due to my cutting out.
Image

Also managed to assemble the resin exhaust nozzles which came bundled with the kit I bought , TBH the kit nozzles are more than adequate for the job and the resin ones don't add much to the build apart from extra weight .

Here's how she stands at the moment , cockpit and front wheel well installed , fusealage joined and wings attached , bomb and undercarridge bays done and dusted , exhaust done and now airbrake wells done.

Image

Just started to explore the canopy kit , navigators canopy assembled .... just needs tweaking a little.
My first time with vac formed canopies and resin parts ... the pilots canopy looks to be a lot trickier !

Diorama reference... the refuelling lorry looks pretty close to the model used at Boscombe:

Damien , you are a star !
Saw that pic in your book , but only part of the lorry is visible , I knew I could get pretty close with the Dinky diecast but never absolutely spot on. My father in law couldn't even remember what lorry they used at Boscombe back in the day.
I pondering whether it had the booms on top , but this pic has just answered my question :D

On another note , does anyone have an idea or a clear picture of the exact writing and markings on the pan at Boscombe ?

Cheers !

Quick update...

Canopies now done , sprayed orange inside , masked off , undercoated , top coated , masked off again , bronze / brown sprayed and unmasked .... Phew !

Also started detailing the fuselage with a 0.35mm drill , pics show a dark wash over the detailing , I'm just using this to I can see where I've drilled, This won't be the case with the final model as I think I'll be using a medium colour wash.

Finally for now ....
The fuselage all joined and main undercarriage legs in place ( this needed to be done before putting the top and bottom halves together )
Couldn't resist placing the tail fin on and the exhausts at the rear :)

She's into the workshop tomorrow for a coat of paint :)

that is one seriously impressive build, don't think I've ever seen the TSR2 kit before and you are certainly doing the kit justice and the after market parts are certainly adding to what will be a distinctive diorama when its completed..:) I'm definitely looking forward to seeing this one when its finished..:)

This is going to be one of the best builds on UKAR for 2014! Amazing work and such attention to detail added with all the extras. Stunning! and I am looking forward to seeing more. I have one of these kits in my stash, but it won't look as good as this.

Just a few little updates from over the weekend....

Managed to get a coat of paint on :) I've found that Humbrol rattle cans are awesome for painting larger aircraft

Started on the undercarriage and wheels yesterday .
Added some detailing with lead wire , first time I've used this so please excuse the sloppiness .
Not sure if the weathering is too much though , any thoughts on this ? I can remove more as it's just a wash and will rub off.
