Apologies - Not an aircraft model - a ship!

Post by DerekF »

For a while I'd wanted to build a Cutty Sark model so I attempted the old Airfix kit which was abandoned in disgust. This however is the newer and much better Academy kit. I have no idea on the accuracy of the kit or my efforts at it but I'm reasonably pleased the way that it's turned out.

Very good Derek - I assume Mrs F will not be going near it with a duster!

She's scared to go near it at all! She did ask how I was going to get it in a bottle though.

You will have to first empty a (quite large) bottle !
If that is what she is asking for, just take her words ...

Nice kit, by the way. I believe that you are no longer scared by stringed biplanes !

Just in case someone might consider a similar project, how on earth do you approach the rigging lines? Is it best to start in the middle of the ship and work outwards?

No need to say sorry Derek we all dabble with other vehicles at one time or another. I tried to build Airfix's Victory kit, but the rigging defeated me then. Your making this, me want to try again. You've done a grand job btw. Quick question the climbing ladders on the rigging are they supplied with the kit? On the Airfix one they were rubber and needed a lot of trimming to clean up !

Thanks folks.
The rigging came in the kit - it was a sort of stiff thread. The instructions were quite nicely laid out and easy-ish to follow in four stages. There were one or two places where a bit of guesswork was involved. Sharp tweezers, good light and superglue, combined with patience and some bad language and the rigging was done over three nights.
The ratlines (see, I know all the nautical terms now!) were fine plastic parts and fitted very well. The old Airfix ones of plastic coated thread were a nightmare.

I built this model of the Golden Hind 35 years ago and was reasonably pleased with the effort. It's taken a while to build another ship though...
