Re: Weston 2022
Fab to hear about its return. Such a lovely little seaside show (and usually one or two really rare gems of helicopters parked on the lawn!)

Re: Weston 2022
Hi all - I'm going to go to this one for the first time, are there any decent spots with a bit of elevation/alternative viewpoints (like Dawlish used to be!).
The website is pretty broken, but it looks like a decent enough day out at the seaside. I plan on driving to Taunton and getting the train in.
Cheers, Jake.

Yep, and it's better for the light as well. But don't expect to walk there from a station! You'll have to drive and park up, probably at the National Trust car park.2e1var wrote: ↑Tue 24 May 2022, 12:59 amYup, head up Brean DownG-CVIX wrote: ↑Sun 22 May 2022, 10:10 amHi all - I'm going to go to this one for the first time, are there any decent spots with a bit of elevation/alternative viewpoints (like Dawlish used to be!).

Re: Weston 2022
Don’t expect to get particularly close to the action at Brean Down…..Dawlish it is not!
Re: Weston 2022
I did think that might be the case, but thank you all regardless. I'll likely have the partner in tow so it might be an ice cream and crowd centre affair anyway. If she doesn't come along I'll drive and get a spot up there.Mictheslik wrote: ↑Tue 24 May 2022, 6:45 pmDon’t expect to get particularly close to the action at Brean Down…..Dawlish it is not!
Dawlish was fantastic, wasn't it?

Its almost like a dummy run of RIAT with that prop line up............ .(runs for cover)
Re: Weston 2022
Don't expect to get close to the action on the beach either. They buggered up the display line in about '15 and it was awesome. Ever since it seems to get further away. Just saw the Tutor display mentioned, you'll need bins for that alright.Mictheslik wrote: ↑Tue 24 May 2022, 6:45 pmDon’t expect to get particularly close to the action at Brean Down…..Dawlish it is not!

Re: Weston 2022
How do we think the train strike will affect attendance for this show
Planned Shows for 2022 - Midlands air festival, Cosford, Weston, Southport, Riat, Blackpool, Bournemouth
Re: Weston 2022
Having watched from Brean Down in previous years, it was only ever any good for the bigger or faster jets, I remember having some great passes from Vulcan, Canberra, Typhoon, Red Arrows in years gone by.Mictheslik wrote: ↑Tue 24 May 2022, 6:45 pmDon’t expect to get particularly close to the action at Brean Down…..Dawlish it is not!
However the smaller and slower aircraft will hardly get anywhere near. Looking at this years participation I think I would give Brean Down a miss.
Re: Weston 2022
The best place to watch this show is Steep Holm. Think the boat is quite expensive to get over there so I was told.
Re: Weston 2022
I presume you're not being serious! If the trust that run the island are even running a visit that day it's not for airshow enthusiasts. The island is a SSSI and trips to it are (tide dependent) between 10 and 12 hours long.

Re: Weston 2022
Looks like the great war display team and BBMF have both Cancelled so far today due to weather.
Planned Shows for 2022 - Midlands air festival, Cosford, Weston, Southport, Riat, Blackpool, Bournemouth
Re: Weston 2022
GWDT, Cheeky Champ and BBMF all cancelled due to wind. Sounded like GWDT were standing down for both days but not sure about the others. Blades were also a no-show, apparently grounded by a "fleet-wide technical issue" - I'm assuming that relates to the problem they had at Duxford last week. Global Stars were added as a replacement for the Blades, closing the show.
Apart from the wind the weather was much better than forecast, although I've never seen Weston seafront so empty for the airshow. Was decent for a seaside display, although the cancellations made the programme seem quite disjointed with large gaps between some of the displays. The Yak-3, Tutor and wingwalker (there was only one) seemed particularly far away - in fact, I think the Yak was closer to the crowd when he passed back behind the beach on his way home after displaying than at any point during the routine. The commentator even picked up on it at one point, recommending binoculars to the crowd during the wingwalker display.
The biggest shame was that they didn't have the helicopter static display this year, which is something that has really set Weston apart in the past. Hopefully this is just a temporary change and we'll see it back there in the future.
Was the first time I've seen Gazelle Squadron as a four-ship, although it's a shame this meant some of the two-ship manoeuvres like the carousel had to be cut. For me, other highlights were - somewhat surprisingly - the Autogyro and the Grob 109B. I thought the latter would struggle with it not being a dusk pyro display, but I thought he gave a very good show.

Re: Weston 2022
I was wondering about this this year - I’m hardly a regular, but I enjoyed that element the most when I did attend.

Re: Weston 2022
It would seem from on-location reports that the Public attendance at this ostensibly free event is somewhat smaller than even the pre-pandemic days?
The combination of Display-line distance, flying display items & financial austerity is gently making these 'come-back' shows a waste of time, effort & money! Add to that the understandable apathy of the allegedly insignificant enthusiast numbers that can't justify the trip & the inevitable result will be the loss of another venue, equals less income revenue for aircraft operators, equals less variety in display participants, equals more apathy = Event gone forever!
Sadly the case that previously I wouldn't be at home on a weekend when there were Air-shows happening.

Re: Weston 2022
Actually I am being serious. I'm going back maybe 6 years but there was a large group of people with cameras on there watching the show a lot closer to the action. Don't know if they were aircraft enthusiasts or not but they had gone over there to watch the show. Wouldn't have thought they'd have been stranded over there for 10-12 hours though.
Re: Weston 2022
Yesterday was very quiet, I was on the south side of the Tropicana centre and there were several metres between people on the fence-line. Today was busier, but there were only a handful of food stalls in the gardens and on the road, far fewer than in previous years.Stagger2 wrote: ↑Sun 26 Jun 2022, 11:23 amIt would seem from on-location reports that the Public attendance at this ostensibly free event is somewhat smaller than even the pre-pandemic days?

Apart from the wind, the weather was great again today, despite apocalyptic forecasts earlier in the week. I think a combination of that and the rail situation have kept people away. Hopefully they'll get enough support from the local council to go again next year and circumstances will be better.
