Flying Day Duxford ‘The Americans’ Sat 23rd July

Post by TheJannerDave »

Just a heads up to anyone planning to travel by rail, it appears Greater Anglia are planning strike action on Sat 23rd July. Would affect anyone arriving at Cambridge and Whittlesford Parkway. Details in link below.
I was planning on travelling from Devon for this show having got my members ticket. Certainly need to keep an eye on whether the strike happens to avoid unnecessary travel not to mention anyone who has actually paid for tickets and are planning to travel by rail.

It will be my first “Flying Day” at Duxford next week. I was just wondering is there a set timetable for the display aircraft aka in the afternoon from 2? Or is it a very much informal day with displays at the operators/pilots discretion?

There are set display times, often split into 2 sections, always during the afternoon

As the trains are not running an alternative to get from Cambridge to Duxford is the Bus. Sort of.

From stop 3 Cambridge railway station, the No.7 for Saffron Walden. One bus an hour, on the hour. The other goes to Pampisford. A longer walk from there.

When the bus turns off the A505 and down Moorefield Road, towards Duxford village (can't miss the turning as there is a big VOLVO building on the corner) and a short way down Moorefield Road is a bus stop. About the same distance to walk from there as from Whittlesford station.

Miss Pick Up is off to Ireland on Friday for an airshow and is away all weekend, so no chance of her being added to the line up unfortunately.

Hearing unofficial rumours that RAF Mildenhall/ RAF Lakenheath may be supporting this flying day in some way. No idea exactly how that will pan out (if at all) but will be a welcome addition to the day if they do attend.

Usually have Squadron stalls outside American Air Museum.

Such a pity no trains tomorrow with no services to Cambridge or Whittlesford Parkway as this will surely diminish the crowd. For those able to go it looks a terrific line-up. Enjoy.

Trains from King's Cross to Cambridge are still running as it's only Greater Anglia on strike.

Rumour on the Duxford FB group has it that Hawker Fury G-CBEL will fly with the MiG instead. Also, Hun Hunter Texas apparently replacing Miss Helen in the display.

EDIT: the above is also mentioned in the Duxford diary! Promises to be a good show

Thanks Pen Pusher for train advise but as I am in Devon the revised timetable makes it a bit ‘tight’ to get to DX with time to spare. A pity but I hope those that attend have a lovely afternoon, weather looks good.

Lots of people here, of the 6,000 tickets sold 4,600 of that are for members so not much of a profit there. Nice line up of warbirds, not all flying, out on the grass. American crash truck/police car from Mildenhall/Lakenheath on static and I've heard a lot of American accents.

Nice to see the 48th FW Heritage jet make a couple of flybys before the main flying started.

Attended with my daughter and arrived just after 10am. Was quite a relaxed experience (after the scrum and weather of RIAT the week before) on this visit to Duxford and topped up my patch collection from the Mildenhall and Lakenheath people.

Nice to see the F-15 flypast prior to the main flying section, though I was out of position to actually photograph it.

Some nice formations during the flying display part of the day - including the opening act of Sally B with two P-51s. The highlight for me was the US liveried Mig-15 from the Norwegian heritage people. Some really nice passes, including a well lit top side and those will be the stand out photos from me for this event.

I'm starting to find 400mm to be a bit of a challenge at Duxford now for the flying, maybe that was because we were positioned at the Classic Wings reception area for the flying element.

Noted in some of my images that some naughty field/naughty lane activity still seems to be possible.

Enjoyed the day...
Now officially qualifies as a 'regular' at Famous Dave's - El Centro

Arrived just after 11, wasn't expecting there to be as many people as there were (compared to the last flying day I went to), but it was still very relaxed and easy to move about.
As has been said, the flying was superb. Special mention to the pilot of the Suffolk Spitfire as it turned out it was the owner flying it on their debut display, and what a lovely display it was too!
One minor niggle will be the appearance of the F-15. It was great to see, but could we have been given a bit more notice? It was announced pretty much as it was running in, and I was lucky as I had only just come out of the Land Warfare Museum so I was in a position to see it. I'm sure there were many who missed it entirely. I can appreciate the desire to have a 'surprise', but maybe a 5 or 10 minute warning next time?
I can also assume the Fury went tech, albeit nothing was mentioned over the tannoy. (Was advertised during the run-through in the morning as flying with the MiG.)

i thought it was a great day and great display.

my only gripe was leaving the north side car park. got back to the car at about 4:15 (wasn't even busy at this point) and got out about 5.30 after spending an hour not moving.

every single time they put people over there it ends up being a mess. no one guides traffic within the car park so it becomes a shambles with everyone trying to make up new routes to get out.

can't understand why if they insist on using the space they don't bother to staff it properly

Nightmare, you have my sympathies - I would just go bananas in a situation like that. Hope Duxford reads this. However I just think they don’t care about these problems.
